I'm not crazy about Government taking taxes on lottery, as long as it gets used for GOOD Cause...But some States, Mass. being one of them has ruling will only pay out to 1 winner. So if you are in a lottery pool or play with family members. 1 person collects the winnings and gets taxed 25% fed/ 5% state on that win, then when tax time comes around might get another 14.5% more taxes added on. If you are talking about strategies like buying unpopular numbers or buying tickets at locations where rules are slightly different so the payout is higher, then I agree. I for example always pick numbers that other players avoid. That way, whenever I win in the lowest prize tier, in the majority of cases, I get above average payout because less people picked those unwanted numbers and therefore the prize pool for that tier was divided amongst less players. I've been running an organized lottery pool at work for 3 years now for Powerball. The amount of people in it have been between 12-20, I try to keep 20 people. What makes these numbers appears mostly in all combos, whether its pick 3/4....0,1,2,3. The key word here is APPEARS, trying to outwit random is akin to chasing your shadow ! I tried the convenience store one time but they screwed up my purchase so I got stuck with the power play instead of the needed amount for the month and when I get them validated I have no issue with getting the receipt. It probably doesn't matter much which filter-pattern is 1st and which is 2nd and which it 3rd and which is 4th and which is 5th, Etc, what does matter is that you need to know what to filter and how, otherwise your prediction will fail. You need to use as fewer filter-patterns as possible to reduce the pool of numbers just enough, too much filtration might filter out the winning number. Filtering is a very delicate thing, one mistake and the prediction fails.

Of course their are, playing the tickets separately is to not have to send money to one person. since I believe it's illegal to send money via PayPal or other for gambling, so each member will play their share of the game and if there is a winning ticket it will be spread by the amount of pool members.
