Are you playing Mega Millions with the $5.00 per play?
I've never heard of a lottery winner getting off tax free. They're paying at least 37% and considering all the cuts to programs for avg Americans and all the bloated contracts they're giving to billionaires idgaf if no one ever pays taxes, see if they can all of a sudden find a way to budget.
Somebody once told me a loophole the wealthy use is it's a felony to file a false tax return but it's a misdemeanor not to file one at all and the irs doesn't have the staff to go after misdemean

It's mind-boggling how many people are willing to subsidize somebody who has 50, 100, 1000 or 100,000 times as much money as they do.
Idaho uses lottery proceeds for schools. I already pay my fair share when I pay my property taxes. On top of that, I pay 10X that amount to the lottery each year. My state taxes have been overpaid for 30 years now.
I'd be happy to pay full tax on Saturday's Powerball jackpot, but I would love it if the state didn't collect tax on lottery wins until the ca

That means it's diffrent. Reguardless if they automatically add something.
Here's an experiment that should be extremely easy if you're really in Baltimore. Walk or drive the short distance to a convenience store, walk in, and say, Good day, Sir/Madam. I'd like to purchase one Powerball ticket with Power Play . Then you can get back to us and let us know if the cost is different than buying a ticket in Idaho. If it is you can boast about being right every day for a year. If it's not the bes

The state taxes should be the same... LOL
An Idaho Powerball ticket is not priced differently. For $3, you get one line with Powerplay. It is exactly the same price as one line with Powerplay anywhere else.
What makes Idaho different is not the price, but the lack of a $2 ticket no Powerplay.
State taxes should be the same in every state ... I'm still cracking up at that one!

Powerball reaches $643 million: highest lottery jackpot of 2025
Taxes on a billion is $370 Million(37%)....What state do you live in that has an additional 17% state income tax to come up to the $540 Million in taxes ?
Even N.Y. with an additional 10.9% doesn't come close to 17%

Florida man arrested after attempting to cash stolen $115,000 Fantasy 5 lottery ticket
This story might be more complicated than it already appears to be.
Jawed presented the ticket to The Florida Lottery and initiated a claim on October 20.
Authorities contacted Jawed by phone on Nov. 24, 2025, and visited his home on january 5th. He was booked in The Palm Beach County jail on January 8th.
That says to me that Jawed could have been paid by The Florida Lottery on October 20th, but if they did that, then they would have withheld Federal Income Taxes from the payout. S

Louisiana lottery winners collect their "Night of Millionaires" Powerball prizes of $1 million
Pattern on play slip triggered nationwide windfall as Louisiana ranks third in wins
By Kate Northrop
Lottery winners who struck it big in the Powerball Night of Millionaires drawing that awarded nearly one hundred players a second-tier prize of $1 million or more have been lining up to collect their prizes, one after the other.
In what was dubbed the Powerball Night of Millionaires by lottery officials, Louisiana was the state that came in third for the greatest number of second-tier

Virginia: 5/1 - 5/31/2026
If you had played that for $0.50 today, it would have paid $400. Don't do it for a buck or you'll have to go to the lottery office and pay taxes.

Oregon lottery kept my $1500 winning ticket
It has nothing to do with taxes. They are keeping my ticket because my friend had taken it to wilsonville to cash it in. They say that I wasn't allowed to do that and they are keeping my winnings.

Anti Computerized Lottery Petition
Hate to give you the bad news but if you win in Va, but live in Md, you will pay the Va 4% initial withholding at time of payout, 5.75% total tax due, plus the difference between that and Md's 9.5% state tax. And the 24% fed taxes.
Go to USA MEGA, click on MM FAQ's or PB FAQ's, scroll down past the state tax tables and read the section,
If I live in a state that taxes prizes, but bought my ticket in a state with no tax on prizes, do I still need to pay state tax?
