She is cringing at the onslaught of free loaders who are ready to pounce on her. If this $500k is an annuity, she most likely will get 25k per year BEFORE taxes and that is just barely enough to supplement her income. Her financial situation will get a slight boost but the general public will look at her as being $500k richer and will be compelled to get a piece of that payout. In their mind, they feel entitled to her winnings.

I heard Buffett said on the news that if someone somehow overcomes the odds of having a correct bracket all the way up to the final four, that he may do a Deal or No Deal type of offer to buy them out at that point. He'll make them an offer they can't refuse. The banker will offer to buy your case for $100 million . . . or you can sleep with the fishes. So do you take the $100M and walk away, or risk it all (winning nothing) for the chance at the billion (annuity) or $500M cash?

Most games that are for life are structured annuity payments that guarantee the winner cannot outlive the payments, but the payments are guaranteed for 20 years (or whatever term is stated) So let's say it's guaranteed for 20 years. If you are 60 and die at 70, the payments continue to your estate for another 10. If you die at 81, then nobody inherits a thing, but if you live to 100, you still are getting payments. Which game are you hoping will make you a match 5 millionaire? PB for me too. If you're looking for the best odds of winning $1M then PB is the game for you. Some states have the Lotto 6/49 games and I think those are the best odds for winning $1M.
