Powerball underestimated by that much?
The real increase in the jackpot is the increase in the cash value, which was about $31.3 million (based on the curent cash/annuity ratio; that may be slightly different than for the past two drawings). A hair under 32% of sales goes to the jackpot, so each ticket contributes just under 64 cents. That works out to just under 49 million tickets to increase the jackpot by 31.3 million. That would have used less than 25% of the possible combinations.
The currently advertised jackpot of $400 mill

Powerball lottery jackpot storms back to $203 million
Yes, I wish the true jackpot was advertised too. I'm originally from Australia and lived in Canada as well, where the jackpot advertised, is the jackpot, no funny stuff. I've read that the vast majority here take the cash lump sum anyway so they're targetting a very small segment of lottery consumers which makes little sense. They should advertise the real, current value, and throw in an extra line about oh, and if you decide to take the annuity your prize will be $!$!$!!!

Powerball lottery jackpot storms back to $203 million
Welcome to LP islandgirl5! The take home pay of $86 million is what the winner would initially receive after 25% in Federal taxes are withheld. The true net amount after the balance of the Federal taxes are paid is under $70 million and that is only if the winning ticket was purchased in a state that doesn't charge a state income tax. In many states the true net payout after all taxes are paid is under $60 million...that is a far cry from the $203 million that is plastered on their signs and bil

Three tickets to split $448 million Powerball jackpot
Not for you to judge JonD. People live with their own choices and their own limits. As long as they are within the laws, it is none of your business and not for you to judge or bully your ideas onto others. Last I checked, there is not a limit on wealth nor a limit on dreams of wealth in this country. Although I do understand there are many 'share the wealth' folks who think there should be.
For me personally, I would prefer to be the single winner of a jackpot regardless of jackpot size be

I did not know that if you win 2nd place in the powerball drawing it is not really 1 million you win
Hi maringoman,
I know that there are taxes on the 1 million but the strange thing is when I saw this person's name and that she won 2nd prize in PB it said she start with 700,000 not 1 million, then taxes would be taken from the 700,000. I even called our states lottery headquarters and the woman was saying that if you take the amount in an annuity then you get the full 1 million (minus taxes) but if you take the lump sum you are starting with less than 1 million which was 700,000 then the ta
