if you won over $70 mil- would you settle for the lump sum or annual installments
I am not a doom and gloom survivalist guy owning a bunker and worrying if the government is going to collapse and unable to pay the next annuity.
Then go right ahead and put your faith and trust in the politicians and the bankers who have shown themselves to be so trustworthy with our money as of late.
Especially in California.
Good thinkin'!

Defense worker wins $217 million Powerball jackpot
Would you take the cash option if you were living in the 70s and early 80s? When taxes were 70%+? When interest rates were ~10% or nearing 20%?!
You'd be poorer today than the person who took the annuity, and investing in the stock market, you would have accept considerably more risk and volatility in your portfolio vs. taking a risk-free government bond.
Not always smart to take the cash option.

Ornery dog leads to $1M lottery win
That being the case, why not just let this genius dog do all the future betting?
As long as the dog has the cash and filled out bet slips, who needs the other guys?
Just make sure when the dog wins the jackpot he takes the lump sum, not the annuity, as most dogs rarely make it past twenty.

Would you still play Mega Millions if your state lottery's jackpot was bigger?
I play MM PB for the big jackpots and also the huge second prizes. For 3 lousy dollars you can hit PB second prize of
$2,000,000 cash and the odds for that is only 1 in 5,153,632.65. Most state lottos are 6/49 and the odds of hitting
the jp is 1 in 13,983,816 and the jp is an annuity which means you end up collecting 1/3 of the original jp.

Cash vs annuity, another factor to consider?
tax wise... its anyone's guess... this year there is the obama care tax (3.8%?) and the increase to 39.6%... but isnt the better question that of potential/expected value of the money?
CT's (conspiracy theorists) are glomming onto the recent events to predict everything from the fall of the US in the next 6 months to Texas executing its option from its state charter and turning itself into 5 different states to...
but all the predictions seem to point to one thing... do i want to trust THE

Cash vs annuity, another factor to consider?
That is definitely something to consider.
Even if the dollar doesn't completely lose it's value and die... if you take the annuity, you're always gambling on what the tax code changes will be from year-to-year. Right now, taxes are better than they used to be in the not too distant past ... but ... with all of the recent out-of-control government spending and the country's current deficit, I can't imagine tax rates getting any better from here out.
Even if you do take the cash on a huge am

Do some number combinations have better odds?
That's because the thought of someone spending $5-$10 and winning $50-$250 doesn't bother some folks as much as the thought of someone spending $5-$10 and winning over $200M or an annuity that pays $2M-$4M over 30 years.
Some folks just hate the idea of a lucky lottery player winning so much money for so little work.
Twenty years ago those folks convinced Ohio to had a rule limiting the amount one lottery ticket could win to $20M which was eliminated after six months because players stoppe
