NY brothers claim $5M win from '06 lottery ticket
The true winner (49 year old maintenance worker) was duped into thinking he had won just $5k, the brothers offered him $4k to avoid taxes. The true winner may be eligible for six years of past lottery installments right away. ($250k per year for twenty years was the annuity). This is a huge score for justice, thank God the lottery officials never gave up their hunt for the real winner!

Life after winning the lottery
Very simple...the $41.5 million figure was the annuitized jackpot amount the lottery always advertises. They chose the lump sum amount which would have been half the annuity amount (~$20 million). After federal and state taxes, their take home, or net, winnings was the $13 million figure. It is the same as someone having a gross salary of say, $70,000 gross but only having take home (net) pay of less than $42,000 after all taxes and deductions are factored in. Depending on one's lifestyle, c

$185 MILLION: Huge Powerball lottery jackpot set for Wednesday

Saturday was the 11th consecutive Powerball drawing without a jackpot winner. The jackpot run started October 6 as a $40 million jackpot. The estimated cash value for the new jackpot is $123.7 million. After-tax cash and annuity prize amounts are reported state-by-state on the Jackp

CA Lottery - California Love - CA Lottery Scratchers
Lets hope they don't release Set for Life again in the previous form. That game has such lousy payouts/return on the lower tiers, you lose so much more money than on other $5 games. Typically less than 40% return most of the time in actual play, whereas other games will give you about 65% return. At least they finally tried to catch up a tiny bit with other states by adding $10 games last year, they have a whopping two $10 games now. Maybe they might do more $10 games with an annuity option,

Do some number combinations have better odds?
Thanks for all that work Stack. Very informative. It just goes to show (once again) that the state has the power to make up the rules as they go. No reason to pay the 53rd winner any more than the 52 other parts in a pari-mutual pay out situation, except that the state can do whatever it wants (before or after the fact) and the courts will uphold it for them. Perhaps the player should have kept his mouth shut and taken the win as an annuity??

Rollover Probabilities for Powerball's current jackpot.
The current Powerball jackpot is $203M Cash/$305 million annuity as of this writing. Based on these figures the anticipated sales, according to the Lottery, should be around 102.6M, yielding 56.3 million tickets sold. The Poisson probability distribution for this number of sales (purely randomized) suggests the following probabilities for this many tickets sold: k, number of winners p(m,k) 0 74.62% 1 21.84% 2 3.20% 3 0.31% 4 0.02% Anything can

Do tickets bought for consecutive drawings ever win the top two prizes, in Mega Millions or Powerbal
Some state lotteries have a page where they show some of the winners holding the large check with the amount they won and I saw a MM check written for $250,003 and a PB check for $1,000,007. Saw a few lesser prize checks with amounts that indicated either there was more than one winning line on the same ticket or it was a multi-draw that had matched 2 + 1, 1 + 1, or 0 +1 in a previous drawing. Since the jackpot checks are the amount of the annuity or the cash amount, we wouldn't notice if tha

Brooklyn teen wins $1,000 a week for life
he just doesn't appear to be college material. question is was he going to go before he won the cash? or is he now going because he can afford it? my guess is he is going to go to party. he just doesn't look like the student who will sit at a desk in his dorm room studying every night. when his college cohorts find out about the windfall (they will) guess who will be buying the kegs. he will be popular and some gold digging less than affluent college girl will attempt to get her mitts into him c
