A couple of new questions (I think)...cash gifts, pools winning option
Don't think I've seen these covered: 1. Someone recently posted that a couple could give gifts of $26,000, that being the limit of $13,000 by each (I thought it was $12K).......but if they gave $50,000 let's say, could they call $26,000 of it a gift? 2. If players in a pool win a jackpot, does the entire pool have to unanimously choose annuity or cash option, or can the individuals choose one by one? I'm thinking that would be quite a trick but I'm not sure if it's allowed or not.

powerball ripoff
I really think the reason for the change is because both big games are available in almost all states now, and before the change they were basically the same game. MUSL does't make more money, directly, due to the increased ticket price. MUSL and the states make more money if there's more revenue, but if you don't want to pay the higher price, Mega Millions has a history of even bigger jackpots (and higher cash values). It isn't a scam or a ripoff; it's simply a different game offered to give va

$310 MILLION: Powerball lottery jackpot in rare territory
Scary as hell, but I'm up for the challenge! And always up for some fun! I plugged $193,400,000 into the moneychimp tax calculator for 2012, single, and taxes come to $67,666,761 for a net payout $125,733,239. O_O I hit the PB 33 3 times last night... twice on the freebie $3 QP with power play. Altogether, I won $28 on Wednesday's draw, plus I found another ticket I forgot to cash in for $4, so total to cash in is $32. I'm all in... let's win this thing! Regarding the cash value of the jac

$14.3 million Hot Lotto prize claim withdrawn
Good points. I'll take a stab. For a), my assumption is that officials have a good surveillance image of the purchase. If a close relative of a lottery employee claims the prize, it might come back to them. My guess is it is the fourth question they ask you when you file a big claim. For b) and c) my point was they didn't walk away from collecting, but they could have sold the unsigned ticket at a discount -- even $4M cash for a $14M annuity sounds like a deal. I realize felons and i

Iowa Lottery security chief bent on determining identity of jackpot winner
Whomever purchased the ticket came within an hour and 50 minutes of having the ticket expire and watched the annuity value drop by $2.2 million. Had the ticket been validated exactly the same way two weeks after the drawing, there would be no news story. The real question is why wait until the last hour to cash; the identity of the person who actually bought the ticket is not important unless the ticket was stolen or maybe purchased by an illegal alien. If the Lottery doesn't pay, the law fir

Powerball multi-state lottery to raise prices, jackpots
It was done in mid-2009, but applied retroactively to January 1st. The bill came a few months after a group of NJ players won a MM jackpot of about $200 million (annuity value), and many of them believe that was the reason for the change in the law. News articles quoted a state official as saying it would generate about $8 million per year, but figuring the group collected a cash prize of at least $100 million the state would have reaped a windfall of about $11 million just from that one drawing

mega million jackpots not going up as quick
My thoughts exactly! With the annuity, I don't believe there can be any guarantee the money will be there for 25 or 30 years with the way the world economy is going. OTOH, who knows if the dollar is going to be worth anything either? LOL.

Kentucky store clerk wins $200,000 from duplicate lottery ticket
The first jackpot story I ever read before I started playing Mega Millions was about a couple whom were buying some QP's as stocking stuffers for some of their friends. The man asked for 3 separate $1 QP's and the clerk accidentally printed out a single ticket with 3 lines instead. This man did buy his own numbers that he said he habitually played too. Long story short, the couple won the jackpot for the Mega Millions Christmas drawing on that mistake ticket and were $137M richer (estimated annu
