Yeah, I've combed through a lot of different methods on this forum (and on the internet in general), it's a bit overwhelming. I should create a list of them all honestly. Yup, but we all have one goal - those golden six numbers for the jackpot!! I'm from MA on the East Coast. Is location and factor or variable in one of your systems? Here is a good example of how beneficial syndicate play can be. Using the recent huge Mega Millions jackpot, say there are 100 people in a syndicate, each paying $20 each. In total, the syndicate has $2,000, enough to buy 1,000 Mega Millions tickets. This results in odds of approximately 1 in 300,000 of each person in the syndicate winning $7.8 million. There is no game on earth where an individual can spend $20 on their own and have odds of 1 in 300,000 of winning that much money.

The sad part is when it comes to the Powerball and Mega Millions, its all about the number of combinations that have not sold. The jackpot gets bigger and bigger until all the possible winning combinations are sold. Mega Millions, all 302,575,350 unique winning combinations must be sold. Powerball, all 292,201,338 unique winning combinations must be sold. Until that happens, the jackpot will get bigger and bigger. This is why I quit playing both games. The odds are not worth it.

For those answers, did you assume just one jackpot winner? If not, what number of tickets did you assume were sold? I did the 3rd calculation a while back, factoring in taxes. I remember that it didn't make sense, from an expected return viewpoint, to play Mega Millions until the jackpot was roughly $600M, so your results are in the right ballpark, and are most likely correct. The other calculation of relevance, along these lines, is the number of plays needed for the variance of the EV
