Indiana man wins $5M on scratch-off
It probably was a wealthy white guy, or his wife/mistress/girlfriend. The ticket was sold in Hartsdale, which is right next to Scarsdale. Not a lot of poor people living there, except perhaps in the maid's room, or the staff quarters above the garage.
Then again, it might be my cousin who's a plumber and sometimes works in that area, or anyone else passing through.
FWIW, MUSL just squeaked by on this one. According to lottoreport, total sales for the run were about $140 million, which woul

Weak Powerball Sales?
There's no such things as a free lunch. Do you think they plan to give somebody that starting jackpot out of their own wallets? The starting jackpot had a cash value of about $24.8 million and they sold just under $33 million worth of tickets. That means that their sales only contributed $10.4 million to the cash they had for paying that jackpot. If somebody had won, MUSL would have had to pony up the extra $14.4 million.
The next drawing added almost $12 million to the cash jackpot, giving t

$336 million Powerball ticket sold at R.I. supermarket
They were oh so close. Some 110 employees at Elmont Memorial High School will share a $1 million Powerball prize from Saturday's $336 million drawing -- winning about $4,000 each.
One winner, teacher John Squillace, 33, of Astoria, Queens, said Tuesday he was one of 110 people who won the prize in Saturday's Powerball drawing.
The winning ticket for the $336 million Powerball jackpot.
Thats a hell of a pool. Blows ours away.

$325 MILLION: Powerball lottery jackpot increased before draw date
Figuring out what should happen according to probability is easy. Figuring out what will happen is a bit harder.
For the last drawing the advertised jackpot increased $50 million, which was about $33 million in cash. Putting $33 million into the jackpot pool at $0.64 per ticket requires selling a little over 51 million tickets. Since the odds of winning the 2nd place prize are about 1 in 5.1 million we would expect to have had 10 winners.
Expected sales for tonight's drawing suggest sales

Entire town, except one guy, wins $950M lottery
America needs an 'El Gordo'!
I was in Spain for Christmas and witnessed the success of the 'El Gordo' lottery. I also participated but did not win, but it was fun. The Spanish Christmas Lottery, known as 'El Gordo' in Spanish (or 'The Fat One'), has the biggest prize pool of any lottery in the world. It is a national lottery game organized every year since 1812. Because of the unique way El Gordo is played (the expensive tickets are broken down into 10 smaller tickets), it can be quite s

Connecticut lottery winners settle $1 million battle
Good policy, gocart1.
The only lottery pool anyone should ever even conceive of joining would be one where you know the other members well and you can get your boot in close proximity to their teeth or your hands around their neck. And even that is risky sometimes.
But the worst is getting involved with anybody outside the country, online or otherwise. That's just asking to get ripped off.

Entire town, except one guy, wins $950M lottery
A whole village minus one person won? omg! now thats what I call a true bailout, well except for the ninja who decided to not join in.
Its bad enough when there's an office pool and a dozen people hit a jp and one person decides not to play; here we're talking of a whole village!
No amount of therapy could ever cure the nightmare and regret of that loner, none. SAD.

Another Reason To Not Live In California
Although it's a multi-state game, like all multi-state games, the only thing that is really shared between the states in the jackpot pool. All the lower-tier prizes are basically an in-state game, with payouts coming out of the money collected within that particular state.
That's why California can have pari-mutuel prizes, while all the other states use the standard fixed payout structure.
California has a state law that prohibits fixed payouts.
I have seen this work out the other way a

Would you join online lottery group?
Jack, i kinda understand where youre coming from with the collective pool example youre discussing however the first hint of this leads many posters to believe that there is somhow something illegal going on whether there is or not.
The state lotteries basically hold all the cards and this means it is to thier discretion what is illegal or not .... i personally think the state lotteries hold waaaaaaaaaay to much power in that they have a monopoly and monopolies should be against the law but t

Would you join online lottery group?
thats kind of how my syndicates run now, i have a family one and a pals one. i no longer run the pals one.
and only 3 of us remain in it, but the family one i run with 5 of us and one interstate.
sure its different with good friends or family, we send money via electronic banking, and the pool manager goes and buys tickets. trust in such cases is pretty strong with life long contacts. and the laws aint so tough here in Australia, although no state sells tickets out of its jurisdiction
