Does the size of powerball affect mega?
This is what I found on the New York Lottery website. The estimation of Mega Millions jackpots is based using projected sales. Sales are estimated by a Finance Committee consisting of Finance personnel from each Mega Millions state. The committee bases its estimate upon recent historic trends, weather, competing jackpots and the amount to which potential players are distracted by current events. Once sales are estimated, the jackpot is set using a formula regarding how much of each sale

Ohio Lottery website taking a survey of possible MM changes.
I did just notice this as well. I was going to post a topic but surprise there is already one here...haha. What I don't understand is the odds. They aren't changing the number of balls needed to win. Is that a typo or what? I mean they say the odd of winning will be down to 1 in 12, but how is that going to happen? Just by adding the 2+0 prize? All you get is your money back for that one. I don't like the annuity either...with a game like this just pay the $1,000,000 in cash. Brad

Cash or annuity
Cash for me, thank you. Two reasons: (1) Although I tell everyone that I plan to live to be 101, statistically speaking that's not likely and an annuity would likely outlive me. I see no point in putting my heirs to extra hassles in getting the estate settled. (2) I'm something of a contrarian. I'd love to have plenty of cash to start investing in the stock market right now and in the coming months. Sure, there are going to be more financial problems among various companies, but the best t

International super lottery to create jackpots of $500 million or more
Maybe you and I are smarter than the average player. Sales of MM tickets in NY are never less than about 2.3 million for the $12 million starting jackpot. That's enough to cover about $1.2 million worth of annuity jackpot. When NY lotto rolls the increase is only $1 million until it gets to at least 35 or 40 million, when it increases by $2 million once before returning to a $1 million increase for at least a few weeks. That tells me that even at 25 to 30 million they're selling fewer lotto tick

Jackpot Analysis
Are those amounts listed under Jackpot analysis pretty accurate as far as what we would receive if we were to take the annuity or cash option? When I win tonight, I will get $43,174,800 with the cash option. I'm ecstatic! Brb planning my investments and the rest of my life. Haha, just kidding. It would be nice though!

N.Y. Lottery launches record-breaking scratch game
I would hope I'd be the doorman, and not the doorman's friend across the street. I don't know what the odds are on the prizes. Maybe there are a lot of winners for $30 back i.e. free plays. Ironically the cheaper scratch-offs can eat more money than the expensive ones because most people they win $2 or so they immediately play it back and keep doing so until they lose whatever they were going to spend. Thus it would make strategic sense to have it chock full of small prize winners. You wou

$132 million Mega Millions jackpot was purchased in Mableton, Georgia.
I don't put so much stock in annuity dollars earned per state (as far as JPs are concerned). The reason: California could win three jackpots at 12, 16 and 24 million respectively but Georgia, with only a fraction of California's population, can also win three but $100 million each. While you look at the annuities, Cali has $52 million and Georgia has $300 million, you look at the number of JPs won, and cross reference it with the population base. Now, one could say people in Georgia play the

Woman prepares for 9 months before claiming $8.8M lottery jackpot
In Florida you only have 60 days from the date of the drawing to choose a lump sum, so waiting isn't an option unless the winner wants to take the annuity. However, I would never wait that long. I always say I'd be calm and take time to think about what I want to do, etc., but that little piece of paper isn't worth much to the winner until it's validated. Just thinking about it sitting in a safe deposit box or hiding under my bed would be nerve-racking, so I have to give this lady credit for

How are payments invested?
heres an article i read a little while ago, the biggest buy back of bonds etc in history. seems the states didnt want to lose out with this credit crisis, and forced banks to buy back the now worthless bonds. billions worth, i was wondering if the lotto annuities are part of that deal. gee having the gov on your side looking after you sure makes the annuity a safer option. http://www.finfacts.com/irishfinancenews/article_1014412.shtml ps thats kinda got a different spin to

a "tax" question for those in the know
if it's a fact in the tax code the drawing date is the date ofentitlement, it should be simple for you to copy and paste the code sowe'll all know. I'd be happy to. Better luck understandng it this time. A payment of winnings isconsidered made when it is paid, either actually or constructively, tothe winner. Winnings are constructively paid when they are credited to,or set apart for, that person without any substantial limitation orrestriction on the time, manner, or condition of payment
