Streaks and the " HOT HAND "-article from Ny times
Interesting article. It was briefly touched on, but monkeys also believe in winning streaks (another study performed by the same people in your article). Over at the Ask a Mathematician / Ask a Physicist blog, they put together a short post addressing the confusion surrounding the likelihood of hot/cold streaks. You can read it here.

Is this legal?
OK stack, I'll play one more time, only because your copy-cat 'no need to reply' displays your brilliant level of originality. The article explained the numbers are drawn after the squares are filled in, yes, but you and the article are assuming an honestly run pool. As for the 'subject at hand' it's quite ironic that you use that as a mantra since your 'subject at hand' is trying to rip apart other's posts. Have a nice life stack, since you seem to think you know everything ab

$2 million Hoosier Lottery winner has to give ex-wife $50,000
Magic 007, it appears to be the latter. As the possibly fair $50,000 judgment award [that's $10,000 -- non-taxed again by Fed and State, paid five times annually to his wife during the time of win and claim) is 2.5% of the full advertised $2,000,000 annuitized jackpot win. I understand your confusion though, the article never stated, so we readers have no idea, if he received the annuitized value (paying lower annual taxes 30 times in a much lower tax bracket) or the cash value (receiving 1

Sick of traffic, man stops and buys lottery tickets... and wins $5 million
The article doesn't make it clear, but the scratcher he won on -- Set For Life -- is, as the name implies, one of those win for life games. The $5 million quoted is the minimum payout. The default payout is $5000 a week for life, or $260,000 per year. The article says he's getting a $172,000 annual payout; I could be wrong, but that's probably what he'll clear after taxes. As for why someone his age would not opt for a lump sum, I think you've hit on the reason. It seems like a lot of Lottery

Twelve things not to do if you win the lottery
Thanks for the unsolicited advice Artist77 But Im not the one who wrote an article that says anyone who holds a winning ticket can show up and cash it in. Perhaps you should be chastising the writer of the article concerning his understanding of a barer instrument ? In a way, lottery tickets are the last form of bearer bonds that anyone collect on if they show up with the coupons and bonds. And by the way, no I wont be securing legal advise no matter how large a jackpot I win. Thanks.

Brothers celebrate lottery win by blowing up house
It appears that the Wichita Eagle needs to replace this writer and/or headline creator. This person doesn't understand key fundamentals of tense and logical headline-to-article corresponding. It is too bad that this woman/homeowner had poor judgement. Also, bad that this woman/homeowner and her two children lost their home. Hopefully, there is appropriate level homeowners' insurance, explosion was an accident (she/homeowner and both children didn't know about fuel burners and bongs), adequate

Do some number combinations have better odds?
Ronnie316, Not sure... You're going to have to do better than that if you want to convince people that ...some number combinations have better odds. (They don't.) I've addressed the issue you raised here many times in the past. In the interest of not reinventing the wheel, here is a link to some scholarly research dealing with it, followed by a rehash of my remarks to dr san about it. I hope you won't waste any more of everyone's time trying to confuse these issues. http://www.amstat.o

Delaware couple anonymously claims $50M Powerball jackpot
I agree with you John. I like annonymity and letting the winners tell their story anyway. Great! This is in line with the article from last week that NJ is considering letting winners become annonymous for only 1 year. That doesn't make sense to me to just have annonymity for just one year. Let it be forever like in states like Delaware. The article doesn't mention that the winners identity will be revealed in 1-yr. Note to New Jersey Legislators: Let winners remain annonymous forever like

W.Va. Lottery has $81M surplus
The lottery is probably the only state agency that shows a large profit and lottery revenues were legislated to fund the PROMISE college scholarship program and other areas of education, as well as programs meant to help seniors and tourism . While lottery profits are distributed through the state spending budget, how the profits are spent is by state law and not by a whim of a state legislators. The article clearly explains where the $81 million surplus came from, how lottery profits are bei
