Do you suffer from "oneoffitis"?
I think anyone who has been playing lottery games for awhile feel your pain (note: congrats to those who win the jackpot the very first time you play...but it sux 4 us who have been playing a long time and only winning the bottom two or three tier prizes like $1 - $7...having the winning combo and not playing it for that draw doesn't count...really sux!). But don't feel so hurt...sure winning a pick 3 or pick 4 top prize is still cool but there is a lottery group (I for one don't really unders

Lottery winner from Oregon more than makes up for Enron loss
pumpi76...before you run off and say you want to sue someone, it would be best to understand the process. Powerball sets aside roughly 30.3% of total sales for the jackpot. During this run that came to $88 million. The advertised jackpot was $182.7 million. That is the cost in today's dollars of a graduated annuity that would pay out for 30 payments over a 29 year time period. The cash option was $88 million, i.e. if you want all your money now this is what you get. Then the federal gover

Lottery winner from Oregon more than makes up for Enron loss
P, have you not been paying attention in your tenure here at LP ? You know darn well that the advertised jackpot is annuity based and if the winner chooses cash option, it is somewhere around 50% of the advertised amount, then taxes come out. I think that 59 million take home pay would satisfy all of us. If it doesn't satisfy you, then perhaps you are on the wrong forum.

Wonder where the other half of 390 mill is?
Maybe a financial planner isn't the first person to call, but I certainly wouldn't claim my prize before seeking legal counseling. Regarding the annuity vs cash question, I wouldn't leave that up to anyone else. However, I would review various investment options and spend time running some numbers. Then I would decide what was the best choice for my individual personality and lifestyle. Have you ever seen Deal or No Deal? The audience is always yelling No Deal because it's not their money.

Georgia Trucker Claims Half of Record $390 Million Lottery Jackpot
Maybe you should split your whining into two different threads. A lot of people here would like to see the jackpots advertised at cash value. For starters, that's the only realistic figure, plus almost all winners take the cash so most of the annuity jackpots never really existed. Plenty of people think the advertising is misleading, but if they advertize the jackpot as $370 million the winner can get that much if they're willing to take the annual payments. That's clearly not fraudulent.Anybod

Georgia Trucker Claims Half of Record $390 Million Lottery Jackpot
To better understand the How valuation, you might want to look here http://www.usamega.com/mega-millions-jackpot.htm at the Jack pot analysis. Oh, and keep in mind, the $160 Million is BEFORE taxes, NOT after. That is the current CASH value. It is only worth $390 million if you are willing to have it locked up for 20 years and accept annual installments instead. To understand how that works, you might want to look up info on Annuities (btw...never ever have an Annuity as an investment ve

MM jackpot turns out to be $390m
When I googled Mega Millions earlier, $395 million was the amount shown. One article said: According to New Jersey Lottery officials, the annuity value of the ticket is $195 million and the cash option is $116.5 million, but that's before a federal tax of 25 percent. New Jersey does not tax lottery winnings. Took me a second (I said huh? ) and then I realized they were talking about each winner's prize, so that's $390 million!

MM Payout
As I understand it the annuity payments are bigger because they supposedly get interest on it over the years, while if you get it up front that interest never accumulates. Either way, I aways go with cash value, I'm too pessimistic to actually believe that things can stay the way they are for 26 years. --Racso

If it rolls
I just saw the news article linked below, and it says that according to the Michigan Lottery Commissioner, who heads the MM group, the estimated annuity jackpot will be estimated tomorrow as $470 million if there isn't a winner tonight. The article completely screwed up the info on the lump sum and taxes for the current jackpot, so it may also have comletely screwed up what the commissioner really said, but with a jump of 95 to 100 million for this roll it's a safe bet that the 470 figure is
