Getting Lucky in the New Year
I recently read an article entitled: Getting Lucky in the New Year. The article gives advice on winning the slots at the casinos however I feel it could help lottery players as well; here are a few tips: Listen to your gut feelings and your hunches; Expect the positive; Relax, if you lost today, remember that was another day; Have reasonable expectations about your luck in all aspects and rejoice when you win anything; See the positive side of any situation, paradoxically even losing!

Lottery Post quoted in Powerball "what if" article
I thought I'd pass along a link to a newspaper blog post, not only because of the interesting subject matter, but also because the author referenced some comments by yours truly. http://blogs.trb.com/entertainment/news/gambling/blog/2009/05/powerball_how_the_odds_are_in.html When the jackpot gets large, these kinds of topics come up, and always make for interesting debate.

Consecutive numbers in the Pick 6 lottery have surprisingly high probability but still < 50%
Well, I read the article. Rather I tried to read the article. I am afraid the math is way over my head. Either that or I am too short. Consecutive numbers do ocurr about 50% of the time. That is enough of a pattern to be important. What would also be important are patterns that ocurr only 10% of the time. Or 90% of the time. Those 50-50 patterns are so durn troublesome. I would much rather have a pattern that sits at one end or the other of the spectrum. Got any of those you would care to sha

Sting nabs Minnesota lottery clerks stealing winning tickets
I agree with that - which is why I made that point #1 of things to do to avoid a stolen prize at the bottom of the article. But, the problem is that most people handing their ticket over are doing it in order to determine if it's a winner (they don't know it's a winner yet), and most people would not dream of signing every lottery ticket they get checked. (I know, some people do that, but most people don't/won't.) So that's what makes the rest of the points in the article so important. Vi

$216M Mega Millions lottery winner is from New Jersey
Congrats to the winners. Tried to post a link to an article I found while looking for the video of the news conference but the rules here wouldn't let me put it in. The article quoted Space said there were some colleagues who had opted out of this ticket buy. Call me cynical but I smell a lawsuit coming

Lottery retailers busted in raid
it is not entrapment, entrapment would be if the police gives you drugs and then another police arrests you. What happened in this article is truly illegal and bad. I am always keeping my losing tickets, but when the clerk says I won a dollar or two I do wonder, what if it really won $25 or more? (By the way, I meant to vote all stars for this article, but I messed up and clicked the middle, I thought after clicking then I would be on the rating screen to vote, but inste

How are payments invested?
heres an article i read a little while ago, the biggest buy back of bonds etc in history. seems the states didnt want to lose out with this credit crisis, and forced banks to buy back the now worthless bonds. billions worth, i was wondering if the lotto annuities are part of that deal. gee having the gov on your side looking after you sure makes the annuity a safer option. http://www.finfacts.com/irishfinancenews/article_1014412.shtml ps thats kinda got a different spin to

Gas For Life - Florida Lottery
I wonder if the newspaper article is wrong. Why would a lump sum be equal to the prize value? The winner got $52,000 - a check for $39,000 which they said was after 25% federal tax. Usually, when there is a game that pays for life or 20 years, the lump sum is the value x 65%. Some people win cash for life games like $100,000 a year and opt for the lump sum and it's never $2 million. It's closer to $1.3M. To me, if they are offering the entire $52,000 less taxes it's a no-brainer. Oooh. Shame, sh

Lottery winner facing tax fraud trial dies
I sincerely hope those members here who are fond of making how to beat the tax man posts see this article. Also I hope people take note of this from the article: In 1999, they sold the annuity to Singer Asset and Finance for two lumpsums, $1.59 million to Alex Toth and $1.49 million to Rhoda Toth.
