Mega Draw
The reason the jackpot went up after a win is because it is a BONUS jackpot. Money not claimed after one year is placed in a bonus pool to be given out with promotions and bonus jackpots. My understanding is that US lotteries keep unclaimed money. This is why I love Canadian lotteries even though I do play US lotteries when the jackpots are large. This is the reason why, earlier in this thread, I asked if the next jackpot was going to be $35 million. I see now why some people did not under

Mega Millions lottery jackpot raised to $30 million
I agree on that one. There would likely be major rumors afoot by now if it were won by a pool. Keep the jackpot climbing. With the odds as bad as they are on MM, I'll let others build up the pot before I enter again. And speaking of the odds in relation to the size of the pot, I think I may enter Washington State's Quinto this week for the second time in my life. The odds are 1:2,598,960, but the cash jackpot is up to $2,110,000 for Saturday's drawing.

Jack, you hit the nail right on the head with "luck and coincidence". Hitting any game in the lottery is 99% luck and coincidence, especially with the tougher jackpot odds. All we can do to help is pick the right numbers and let "L. & C." do the rest. I only got into the bigger games to see what difference there might be in using random picks from 60% of the number pool as opposed to a wheeling approach. It's still an experiment in progress but I'm not seeing too much of a difference. G

Winning Mega Millions lottery ticket sold in Cincinnati
I guess it depends on a couple of things like if people won with their own numbers or with qpicks. it's possible that Ohio's qpick machines generators print out more diverse picks than other states. I know Maryland has almost been out of the loop on matching 5 out of 6. I have bought 5 qpicks picks from two different places here and got almost the same numbers from both places. A couple times we had a pool of 10 people and bought 100 tickets and at least 40 tickets had repeat digits and s

Why not a lottery that goes "wide"?
Quote: Originally posted by RJOh on April 15, 2006For those players who think winning $100M or more is ridiculous, there are the local lotteries with better odds and smaller jackpots.  States use multi-state games with big jackpots to attract more players to all their games because it works.  PowerBall has a cap that goes into effect when its jackpot reaches a record amount and then more money is put in the prize pool for the 2nd place winners.  I think it only happened once. Actually, th

Powerball Back-to-Back Jackpots Set Record
Just when it seemed as if the Powerball game had broken all records, yet another milestone has been set with the current jackpot of $220 million: It's the first time two consecutive jackpots have surpassed $200 million. The staggering $220 million jackpot for tomorrow night's drawing follows the last record-setter of $365 million, won in February by a group of eight third-shift workers at a meat-packing plant in Lincoln, Nebraska. The last time two big jackpots paired up was in 2003, when

maximun capacity of players....
50% of sales going to the States is no big secret, it written in their laws and clearly stated on most of their websites. On most of the states websites for PowerBall and MegaMillions it's stated that 32% of local sales goes to the jackpot pool, 18% goes to pay off the local winners of 5+0 and less and the rest goes to the states. This formula didn't change when the matrix of both games changed. The matrix was changed to increase the odds of the jackpots getting bigger before being hit. A la
