It's only the serial number on the ticket that matters. The serial number may be what's used to identify the ticket, but you don't think that's the only information involved in the process, do you? It could be checked when the ticket is generated, it could be checked during validation, or it could be done at both times, but that serial number points to a database entry that contains all the information about the ticket. On a related note, both Mega Millions and Powerball are mum when it comes to what the exact liability cap is for lower tier prizes going para-mutuel (like California already does). Vast majority of players don't know that the lower tier prizes can be reduced (ie. $1 Million match-5 prize could become $100K) in some instances. Personally, not a fan of Just the Jackpot. For group pools though, JTJ could be worthwhile. $1 million 2nd place prize split 100 or whatever ways doesn't amount to much. You're spot on about Just the Jackpot players having an advantage. It wouldn't surprise me to see one or more JTJ winners of a large record breaking jackpot.
