Oregon Lottery winner won't retire
It's funny how the public in general believe winning a lottery is sufficient to retire. A major source of this perception has to do with the media and this story is a prime example. The initial headline doesn't disclose anything about how much the winner won...just that he or she won and won't retire.
I find it as bad as referring to Richard Lustig as winning seven lottery jackpots or that anyone who wins a one million dollar annuity or prize is an instant millionaire . They conveniently leave

Why Do You Think Lottery Winners Always Take The Cash Option?
Ridge and Mike are right on, as well as Coin Toss. I'll take the cash every time.
At my age I'll be dead before the annuity is paid, and who is to say the government doesn't decide to take the rest in taxes, which most certainly will go up. Or they take the rest in estate taxes, inheritance taxes, whatever it might be called.
The money shown in those charts regarding future payments is probably going to be way off in reality.
The government is not going to be our savior as far as the ec

Why Do You Think Lottery Winners Always Take The Cash Option?
noise-gate,
Well we've already seen five years worth of what not having any business or work experience does for someone running the government.
I'm with rdgrnr on the question in the OP - what's not to say lottery annity payments aren't a future government grab? Or at leasr jackin up the taxes on them to make someone who took the annuity really wish they had taken the cash?
The current regome doesn't look for ways to produce, actually stimulate the economy, as nauseam.
All it does i

Do you sign your tickets?
It's really unfortunate that there are states such as yours that forces peoples hand like that. Good thing is there are several state reps pushing for players to have the option. If it is given clearance it would also effect multi state games as well. I don't believe it's a matter of if, but when it will happen.
I remember a time when we had to pick annuity/lump sum at purchase as well and it never made sense. If anything it put folks at a disadvantage by forcing them to make a decision with

Georgia Mega Millions jackpot winner comes forward
I think i may have asked myself that very same question a million times and the only reason i can think of is because they said so. lol!! What amazes me the most are people with 20, 30, 80, 100+ million who cannot find comfort in simply knowing that they have enough cash to last themselves and their families a lifetime. Instead what do they do? They go seeking financial advice about how to make an extra $500K or another million or two and get themselves into all sort of financial products thay t

Looking at that 586 million...I think I want the annunity
Yeah, same here.
Mediabrat, there are advantages/disadvantages to either option, but as I've said before, in 30 years - IF I make it that far - I might not even remember my name, much less that I've got a huge last check coming. There's also the matter of taxes; we recently had a 4.6% increase in the top bracket and unless things start looking up, I don't see the tax rate doing anything but rising from the current 39.6%. Have a gander at the history of top bracket rates and you *might* cha

Was that the official concession speech from Mega Millions?
The net effect of the new Mega Millions matrix change is positive, compared to where MM has been for the past year and a half, which was in general decline.
It's hard to compare individual intervals here and there, of various points in the run on a different annuity. That's kind of like looking at a something big through a straw. But looking at trends and patterns, it's clear to see that sales are up since the new matrix. Maybe not enough to save MM, but they've at least arrested the dive, an
