I did not know that if you win 2nd place in the powerball drawing it is not really 1 million you win
Hi everyone,
Well today I was on my state lottery website and was looking at the past winners for the last six months or so. I came across a woman who won 1 million on the powerball drawing for winning the 2nd prize. The problem was it said that she took the lump sum and would get 700,000 (and less after taxes) are taken out. I was under the impression that it was an automatic payment of 1 million minus taxes if you won the PB and didn't play with the multiplier. Was I the only one who didn't

If you won either the MM/PB JP: How soon would you claim your prize?
1, 2. It may not be true for you but it is true for me. Other people may see it differently but I don't live my life based on other people standard.
3. In case you haven't noticed, this forum is tainted with political and religious confrontations that have nothing to do with the lottery. And it is heavily tilted to the right.
4. I don't have any children and I am single and the only one I may help are other family members. If they are irresponsible, it would do them more damage if I

Record Powerball jackpot won by 1 ticket
How much do we knw about the Multi-State Lottery System ( MUSL ) ?
I do not see any audited financials linked to there Website.
Does an annuity winner have any input into the securities purchased?
I have no reason to doubt their honesty and ability to meet their obligations.
A few names to consider Bernie Madoff, Enron, Lehman Brothers, and World Com.
One thing for sure the states are not going to make up for any shortfall in order to pay a millionaire!!!

How Long Will You Wait to Collect the Jackpot
In Texas, you choose cash or annuity at time of purchase. They also have limited publicity, which I am not 100% on details, but the lottery publishes a lot of trust names claiming jackpots and no publicity photo. I read that it takes 4 days to wire funds to your account after the lottery folks have collected from the other states. However long your receiving entity 'holds' to clear funds, though could be worked out ahead of time.
However long it takes to set up the legal stuff, blind trusts,

Annuity or Lump Sum?
I'm completely disagreeing here. In North Carolina, the governor TOOK the money raised by the lottery, which was supposed to go directly to the schools (*cough* that's why it's called the 'education lottery' *cough*) and used it to pay bills, three years ago.
If they can completely disregard and CHANGE the laws for their benefit, who is not to say they can't do that to your winnings?
Now, I'm not a conspiracy theory person, but I do not trust the government to look out for me anymore. I'm

Annuity or Lump Sum?
You can make more and I agree. I was just pointing out how exactly one can do that. Most people are only used to handling hundreds to thousands of dollars at a time....it will be tough for them to handle millions at a time.
Of course there are those who know alot more (hedge fund managers, investment bankers, active mutual fund managers, Warren Buffett/Peter Lynch of the world, etc.) but it seems to me hard to find who you can trust with all those money. After all, they are looking to ma

if you had the power to change certain things to the MM/ PB jackpots- what would they be?
Every jackpot winner in the entire country has the option to remain anonymous
Make the tally more transparent. Make it very clear how many tickets sold for every drawing at every state. Currently they only show how many winning tickets per draw, not the whole tickets.
Make the jackpot prize more transparent. Jackpot prize should be equal to the lump sum prize, not the annuity.
Lower the wager of PB back to $1. I am perfectly happy with the old PB prize structure.
