NY Scratch-off Discussion
hah i bought only 4 more NJ $10 ones and hit $130 total, so break even now at least. will buy few more tommorrow but yeah when i go to new york in a week or so I usually buy around 5-6 of the $30 win million/yr for life.
i still think the state lottos are just frankly the worst odds gambles you could ever make, given they keep at least 35% (more like 50% if you include their BS annuity terms on top prizes)..
casinos keep only like 10% avg.
ultimately, i just keep is modest. few tickets

NY Scratch-off Discussion
if you ask me, what they do is nothing more than legalized theft. its bad enough they take 35% and make the game an instant loser for anyone that doesnt win a jackpot. but if you DO win a jackpot and are super lucky, they rip you off for 60% overnight.
it wouldnt be so bad if they just taxed you 25-35%, but what kills you is that they put in the controversial advertising jackpots as annuity, which ironically, breaks most state law because when you choose cash the lottery doesnt distribute the

Good Investment Or Not- Playing Every Combination
With rules and frequencies of the drawings now, there would be so many people involved that no one but themselves would know about it unless they talked about it publicly
If they're successful the lottery will know about it. Selling every combination, or even 90% of them without selling an enormous number of tickets is virtually impossibe from a statistical standpoint. There's also the matter of how they would organize their bets. You don't think they're going to sort through 10 million ran

The Lottery Changed My Life Marathon
That is why in the past lottery winners would sell some of their annunity checks to these rip-off companies for pennies on the dollar.
To be fair I've seen some shows where people who sold some of their annuity checks admitted that they sold them knowing full well they were essentially throwing money away and that they did it just because they didn't feel like waiting 1-2 years for that extra money.
Though I suppose you could argue that it was not financially savvy of them since if th

$319M lottery winners revealed
'Hand of fate' intervened, as another customer swiped the ticket he was supposed to get
By Todd Northrop
When Mike Barth reached for a Snickers bar as he stood at the counter to buy a Mega Millions lottery ticket, someone reached over his shoulder and bought the next ticket.
I thought about saying something but decided to just let it slide, Barth said about the Quick Pick ticket sold right before the one he purchased at 2:40 p.m. last Friday.
I bought the next ticket the winning ti

$304,000,000 Mega Millions has just rolled over to...
It did not cover all the numbers.
The odds are about 1 in 176,000,000. Suppose that exactly half of 176 million tickets, 88,000,000 million are sold, and you are buying the next ticket with no information about which combinations are covered. Suppose too that through a miracle (which never occurs by the way) no combination is covered twice. Then the odds of buying a ticket that is not covered are one in two.
On a deeper level, this fact is covered by what is known as a Poisson distribution

Does A Lottery Winner Really Need A Financial Expert?
This is on the Wikipedia page for the lottery ( Lottery jackpot records to be exact):
The IRS requires at least a 25% withholding of any gambling wins in excess of $5000. However, the take home pay for a large jackpot winner is often misleading. Winners often find themselves in a tax bracket much greater than 25% and have to pay any remaining balance owed to the IRS later when they file their returns.
So since every lump sum payment would put you in the 35% tax bracket you would have

Kentucky lottery winner wastes no time claiming jackpot
It's so weird to see so many red-faced comments about the cash option and taxes reducing the jackpot payout. If I didn't know better, I would think that the people posting were noobs playing Powerball for the first time!
Of course the cash option payout is much less.
Of course taxes reduce the payout.
Do you guys ever read the Jackpot Analysis page at USA Mega, or what?!
Naturally if you browsed the USA Mega Home page, you would have seen that the $38.24 million jackpot was split bet

Photos, evidence released in case of murdered Florida lottery winner
I've always said I would elect the cash option if I ever won big, but cases like these are causing me to rethink my position. Maybe we should be lobbying for a change in the prize structures of lotteries to produce more winners of smaller amounts. It might even be wise to eliminate the cash options altogether and require everyone to legally designate, up front, what happens to their, say, $2000 a Week for Life payments when they die. And how about a provision that beneficiaries only receive 1/2
