If you win the jackpot, do you go to tv and news?
IF you are in one of the states that allows you to do that. And yeah, sure, 'only immediate family will know', that will last, about 2 hours. Maybe. And as far as 'not know how much I won', sorry, but all you have to do is know X player won the lottery, and then all you have to do is know how much the pot was to figure out how much someone won, I mean, it's either the lump sum total or the annuity. Not too hard to deduce. People STILL don't understand the power of money, the power of th

Thank you TSC, The payout was $829.00. Sad, I know... But it is $829 I did not have before. The jackpot prize I missed was 1.2 million. The game had just been hit the week before. I would have taken annuity with such a small jackpot, otherwise I will always take the lump sum. I hope to find it is a decision I will have to make at some point in my lifetime.

There is no reason Mega Millions and Powerball can't allow jackpot winners to remain anoymous
I dont trust computerized drawings, which the hoosier lottery uses. Indiana allows anonymous winners. Also, the Indiana lotto almost never gets above a few million, where before, when they used balls and it was televised, it would get over 10M quite often. Plus, the lottery is set at 1M for the first 2 drawings after a winner, so it isnt even increased if a winner isnt chosen until a 3rd drawing and then only increases 500K. Also, the cash option is so low, it isnt even worth playing. Last wi

$325 MILLION: Mega Millions lottery jackpot rolls again
LOL, love Devils Advocate! Choosing cash over annuity has NOTHING to do with spending but everything to do with taxes and and a little bit to do with investments. I know today what the tax rate is. I know nothing of the tax rate in the future. I do not wish my once in a lifetime, life changing experience to be spread the wealth fodder for every stinking person and their dog. If that makes me selfish, so be it. I'm a selfish bitch. Did you ever notice how those millionaires in Congress never t

Something stinks with Powerball
Sooooooo, Neal Wanles never had the slightest chance? I just don't believe they are cheating on these games, they don't have to. Look at the odds. Look, I have also wondered why the difference between cash and annuity was different between PB and MM. But, if I win either one, I'm really not going to care too much because it's enough money to last me the rest of my life. I work with a guy who every Tues and Fri asks me how much MM is up to. My answer everytime is I'm not sure and I don't

Lottery winners broke, busted
But this man never was a millionaire! He simply won a $1 million ANNUITY; which only paid out a gross of $50,000/year over 20 years. Now let's look at that beginning $50,000 ... subtract the high New York Lottery STATE tax (possibly a county tax too) of at least 10%, PLUS simultaneously subtract the high FEDERAL lottery taxes of 31%. Hum, how much is the probable net remainder after taxes that this man gets to keep for spending, investing, or saving? The remainder amount is a maximum of only

Lottery Post quoted in Powerball "what if" article
Keeping this train going further: You can eventually deduct all your losing tickets (the $194,999,999), meaning you'd be taxed on only the $27 million profit you'd make. But it would probably means some time with the IRS, a lot of time. Not all of the 194,999,999 will be losers. In fact I've done the math. This doesn't include tax or powerplay variables. This also doesn't take in account the VERY large increase in the final jackpot because of the large number of tickets sold for this d

Why is the cash option different for MM and PB?
The annuities are structured differently, with the Powerball annuited being paid in graduated installments - the payment increasing over time. Basically the annuity is a worthless concept and is merely marketing. Powerball messed with the structure to hype its advertising. You are supposed to think 220 million but the real prize is not the equivalent of the 220 million Mega Millions jackpot. The cash value is what counts, and represents the actual prize for either lottery. The real way

Cash option and taxes
I'm not complaining about 72 million dollars, I would probably be set for life and so would the generations ahead of me. I could help many people who are in financial trouble and gain millions in interesting every year. The possibilities are endless, HOWEVER, as nice as it would be to win one million dollars, chances are, I would have to choose between taking it all up front (which would be about 350 thousand after taxes) or recieving 20-30 thousand a year. I probably would take the cash option
