Then someone tell me if I'm wrong about this. Say the amount of the lump sum or cash jackpot was $1 million. If I get that million in a lump sum, I have to pay 35% taxes ($350,000) right off the bat. If the state puts that million in an annuity, they do it without paying taxes, so the whole $1 million is invested to create the higher annuity jackpot amount. So... PB and Mega Millions (am I the only one who still calls it The Big Game?) give you a choice, and some games make you take cash, and some make you take an annuity.
