Alabama woman claims $80 million Powerball jackpot
An Alabama woman has claimed her prize from the winning Powerball ticket sold in North Escambia, Florida, on April 11. Alice Dawson, 60, of Frisco City, AL, chose to receive the $80 million annuity jackpot as a one-time, lump-sum payment of $53,440,213.76. This is a blessing in our lives and proves that anything is possible with faith in God, said Dawson. We plan on using our winnings to help our friends, family and our church. The winning $80 million Powerball Quick Pick ticket was t

Wealth accumulation
I do not understand big winners who buy a new house with a loan, then can't make the payments after they squander millions of dollars and end up foreclosed on with nowhere to live. If you win more than a million after taxes and can't afford to pay cash, then you can't afford the house. I'm with the earlier poster who said buy your house and cars with cash. Put aside a few hundred grand for emergencies to be used ONLY for real emergencies - housing, taxes, medical. Hands off for any other pur

New Show About Lottery Winners Starts Today ...
Drenick1 when I explain this to you, you are going to wonder how you could have been so dumb! It is a marketing gimmick! The lottery is not picking up any of the taxes they are just advertising the amount AFTER the IRS required amount is withheld! They can bloat the jackpot by advertising an annuity amount. They can advertise the pre-tax cash value or they can advertise the amount after the required IRS withholding. John Gruber was right when he said some people ar

Wisconsin MegaBucks $$
In PA the starting jackpot is $500,000 so it can take a whole month or five weeks just to get to $1 million dollars. It starts to move a little better after that. Yes, you are correct, the difference in population probably has a lot to do with PA having smaller jackpots plus I have another theory, unproven of course ... maybe more people have given up or cut back on MM and PB going after better odds to win something. Thinking about it ... the smaller population actually works or is a plus

When is the Last Time a Jackpot was Hit by a Group ?
Go to the MM and PB websites and click on Winners Galleries or something similar. They provide the jackpot winners year by year, names, location, etc.....unless of course they were fortunate enough to be in an synonymous state, then you don't get as much information. Here's one from Powerball's Winners Stories: FlaMass Family Lottery Joint Venture Florida April 23, 2014 Cash $148,800,000.00 annuity $86,932,220.04 cash The MM site has several $1M winners that were

Why people who won the jackpot frequently decide to choose money cash over annuity money?
I've heard, but don't know if this is a fact... if you take the annuity and die before the full payout, your heirs or estate may be subjected to the entire tax bill at once for the value of the remaining payments. So... for simplicity, let's say the jackpot's annuitized value is $30 and you get paid a dollar a year for the next 30 years and pay $0.25 each year in taxes. In year 15 you kick the can... Uncle Sam says... gimme $3.75 in taxes now. Well if your heirs are only getting a $1 a

New Lucky For Life game
For winning a million dollars, Powerball is roughly comparable. Powerball 2nd tier odds is 1 in 5,153,633. The cash value of the 2nd tier prize in Lucky for Life is ~$390,000 though roughly 2.8 times easier to win. All in all, both Powerball and Lucky for Life are about comparable, when adjusted on a wager basis ($2 for one MM; $6 for 3 LFL - playing same numbers 3 times), in regards to the 2nd tier. However, if the top jackpot is what one really seeks, playing Mega Millions with Megaplier is

Monopoly Millionaires game
Just when I thought the MMC game couldn't become even more of a ripoff. On a related note, many of the MMC participating lotteries have posted notices saying the MMC game is ending with no mention of it returning. It will be confusing to some, if it comes back, especially so soon. And for sure, many will avoid MMC - why play a failed, retread game that has even worse payouts than the previous incarnation. $5 million annuity is equivalent to about $3 million cash. With that in mind, if a playe

Monopoly Millionaires game
For whatever reason my original poll/MMC topic was closed, so I am posting an update here. This information was released today and only proposed 2 days ago, so it is literally the latest. It's not much different than what I expected.....basically the lotteries are focused on reducing the prize liability. So far this tentative proposal consists of: Starting jackpot at $5 million annuity Starting Club prizes at 1 and rolling based on sales Alternatively (and/or), reduce the amounts on fixed

Texas Lottery suspends sales of Monopoly Millionaires' Club game
The concept behind this game was not bad. I am personally attracted to a game that offers greater odds at a $1M prize vs astronomical odds at a $100M+ PB or MM prize (that you'll never ever win). This game tries to be too much. If it is modified it may be able to make a comeback. They need to ditch the Las Vegas show and use those funds to pay more million dollar prizes. Start and cap the top prize at $5M (fixed payout, no annuity) and make it much easier to win (1 in 30M vs 1 in 72M). Us
