Tough economy?  Some cut back on lottery tickets, wagering
The recent run on powerball is running about $2,000,000 below the average (over 5 draws) for powerball. On the other hand, some of the more recent runs of Megamillions were running above average. It's hard to say what the exact cause is though. Personally I play according to a formula I've developed based on expectation value (for the cash) prize, which is the ratio of the potential payout to the odds. Since Megamillions has longer odds, I tend to play it only after the prize as adve

Lottery winner facing tax fraud trial dies
Of course you can't completely trust your advisors either, I mean you can't just let them have free reign over your assets while you retire and don't have a hand in the managing of things to see where all the money is going, you need to take an active role and be the one who makes the real, final decisions with YOUR money, that's why they're advisors not partners you re supposed to listen to their advise and come up with a decision which should be done after doing your own research, not just bli

How do I determine the interest rate received on annual payments?
The formula which shows the basic relationship is not hard to find; but solving for the interest rate ... that's another matter. I love problems of this kind; but in this case the math is way beyond me. Accountants interpolate from a table to solve this problem, and you can set up a spreadsheet with an incremental series of values and interpolate to get an approximation. (1) PV = A * (((1 - ((1 + i)^(-n))) / i) where PV = present value of the annuity, A = amount of payment, i = inter

Lump Sum or payments?
Can you have both? For example today's Megamillions Jackpot is $150+ Million. Cash After taxes about $70 Mil I will take $45 Million to buy a $90 Million annuity ($2 million in 45 different banks ) I will take $8 million in cash. ( buy forclosed real estate ) I will take $7 million in cash. ( travel, and help family and friends ) I will take the remaining $10 million in cash into short term interest accounts(money market and 3 month cds and saving accounts) Good luck

Lump Sum or payments?
I'm saying that the annuity payment that seemed like a veritable fortune some years ago is just a run of the mill house now. Think of it like that. Let's try it this way, say someone won a Reader's Digest sweepstakes or something and it was for $30,000 a year. Let''s say they won it in the 1970's when a new car was around $3,000 or less. At the time they won it, the $30,000 was a fortune....now it's a car. Just substitue lottey jackpot for RD sweepstakes, and house for car. A lo

Some States Consider Leasing Their Lotteries
I see an Enron style theft in the future if they are privatized. What if a Michael Milken runs one of these lotterys? I wasn't arguing or disagreeing with you, Mike. I only wrote my last comment because you mentioned Enron and Milken in the same sentence and he had nothing to do with the Enron scandal. Kenneth Lay Jeffrey Skilling were crooks who committed fraud and destroyed lives by lying to shareholders. Although I personally believe Milken was a pawn in one of Giuliani's political

Is Greed Good ??
(I never heard of $600 from a book but it depends where you are). When I first came to Lottery Post I was very skeptical of the 900 to 1 payoffs given by the Online betting sites. Most work places with a large number of employees always have somebody with football parlays and where I worked, you could play the Pick-3 with some of those people. I never played the old numbers game but people were still playing it after the Pick-3 started. 600 to 1 was its payoff and that was the lottery pa

Can someone help me out with my math?
Annuity FV = PMT * [ ( ( 1 + i )N - 1 ) / i ] FV = future value (maturity value) PMT = payment per period i = interest rate in percent per period N = number of periods Plug in the known values and solve for the unknown value. (In your case: i)

$6.9M lottery winner steps forward
Congrats to the winner on both winning AND declining the press conference. my question is this... The winner wanted no publicity, so the stupid newspaper starts calling people with the winner's name? Irresponsible Journalism. THIS is why states like Delaware have the right idea. I'll bet she won't be from the region for much longer ... good for her! BTW Match6 is an all-Cash game, no annuity option... Should be worth $4,485,000 after the full tax is paid (you owe 35% on any amou
