$1.6 million lottery payout means 'mortgage-burning party' for N.C. man
A Liberty, North Carolina, man says he plans to pay off the mortgage on his home after his Millionaire Bucks win. Michael Zimmerman, of Liberty, works as an assistant manager at the Ready Mart on North Main Street in Randleman. According to a news release from the North Carolina Education Lottery, he bought the winning $20 ticket at the store on his day off. He got one ticket and didn't win anything, but said something told him to buy a second one. That one turned out to be the winner.

Has anyone noticed the change?

If you perceive a difference, I probably did not explain things clearly enough. Let me know the specific difference that you perceive, and I will try to explain it better. Nevertheless, I had anticipated some push-back, and I was going to add a PS to clarify that quote. The quote is probably accurate insofar as what the Lotto Texas website says. But w

The ugly side of the win. How would you deal with close family and friends who...?
I love this topic, because it is the Happy Place that I go to when I'm down in the dumps and need a little distraction from reality. First, upon realizing that I won...let's say $50 million after Federal and State taxes, I would IMMEDIATELY move to Florida or Wyoming (or a state with no state income tax), establish residency and getting a new driver license. I would establish a trust to collect my winnings, have an experienced team with a Tax Attorney (experienced with lottery or windfall new

More state lotteries adding "win for life" games
Well, just like any other game, you are the one to make the choice to play or not. I play the L4L in Ohio for a few lines. You never know when you will hit. The lower prizes are okay, and the odds for winning are good. 2 Ohio people won 25K for Life since it started a few months ago. So, you never know. If you win the $1000 a day for life on L4L and take the JP annuity, then you would get about 69 a minute for the rest of your life. Not too bad! It won't Lebron James type mo

Record $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot won by 3 tickets
Wouldn't this nested trust strategy give up a lot of the winnings in taxes? Say the prize was 254M annuity, so about 152.5M lump sum... Assuming no state tax on lottery winnings and no contributions to charity and at todays tax rates... The first trust will pay 39.6% in Fed tax, so 60,390,000 in taxes and 92,110,000 The grantor of the trust (assuming the lawyer that claims the prize for you) will need to pay a 40% gift tax to gift the money to the second trust I'm assuming th

POWERBALL CREATES WORLD'S FIRST BILLION-DOLLAR JACKPOT
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who knows what it s like to suddenly become incredibly wealthy has some tips (some practical and some philosophical) for the winner or winners. Hire a tax attorney first. Don t take the lump sum. You don t want to blow it all in one spot. (I don't agree with him on this one. The opposite of not taking a lump sump is taking the annuity) If you weren t happy yesterday you won t be happy tomorrow. It s money. It s not happiness. If you were happy yesterday,

POWERBALL CREATES WORLD'S FIRST BILLION-DOLLAR JACKPOT
Want to take home One Billion dollars cash? The Cash Option sans taxes. (no, not the Annuity) Well first you need to make the following assumptions: You must pay 39.6% to the IRS as Federal Tax You must pay taxes in your individual state if applicable. Lets go with the highest in the country according to LP which is 8.82% so we will calculate by that (thanks New York) And lastly we will assume the most recent Cash Option percentage which is $806 million divided by the jackpot $1.3 B

POWERBALL CREATES WORLD'S FIRST BILLION-DOLLAR JACKPOT
At the Wawa where I buy tickets, there was no line and seemingly little interest this afternoon. The machine was just there, being mostly ignored as usual. Bought one ticket with Powerplay, plus one PA Treasure Hunt ticket ($100K jackpot, which is high for that game). Crazy as it seems, Powerball could roll again. While it's world record breaking, most who played last time likely won't wager more than previously (many already blew their extra funds; maxed out their cash advance lines, etc). A
