Payment of Lottery Prizes
justxploring....I have a different take on the situation you outlined above, winning in Sept or Oct and waiting until January. First what I would do is break down the IRS statement as follows: When Paid A payment of winnings is considered made when it is paid, either actually or constructively, to the winner. Winnings are constructively paid when they are credited to, or set apart for, that person without any substantial limitation or restriction on the time, manner, or condition of payme

Let's Have Fun: Predictions for 2008 (Not number predictions)
Let's have some fun, do some predictions for lotteries and LP for 2008 - (Not winning number predictions like the prediction forum), but predictions as in prognostication, things you think might happen or outlandish things you'd like to see hapen! I'll start with a few: * Pumpi talks Todd into charging for the prediction pages. 25 cents cents for a losing predictions, 1.00 for a winning prediction. When this policy goes into effect the predictions decrease greatly. * A dream interprete

Review: Vultures feast on desperate lottery winners
Hi folks. I'm Ed Ugel, author of Money for Nothing. I'm happy to see that the book has caught the attention of so many lotterypost members. A few thoughts: You're correct, it's a tough, competitive business. However, it's totally legitimate. A winner would be well served have expert advice when they enter into a lump sum transaction.Remember, a million dollar jackpot is really only worth around 50% of the advertised win amount.Still, it's not as black and white as some making comments he

Bunky has officially claimed his bread. Maryland's latest jackpot winner, Ellwood August Bunky Bartlett, claimed his share of the $330 million Mega Millions winnings at lottery headquarters in Baltimore yesterday afternoon. The soon-to-be retired Dundalk accountant was greeted by Maryland Lottery Director Buddy W. Roogow. This is Bunky Bartlett, our new Mega Millions winner, Roogow announced to reporters. Bartlett was one of four jackpot winners. The other three winning tickets were pu

Maryland Mega winner believes in magic
Thank you, wyndechilde, for speaking the voice of reason. For the foremost collection of lottery experts on the net, we are very quick to unleash our venomous barbs on those who have achieved what we most covet. Uncle Jim, I'm surprised that you would count this fortunate soul among the numbers of Jack Whittaker, David Edwards and their ilk. After all, we have no evidence to indicate that he won't invest his money wisely, so let's give him the benefit of the doubt and wish him co

Powerball & Megamillions Growing
Well the recent jumps were: 141-161 = +$20M 161-181 = +$20M 181-210 = +$29M 210-245 = +$35M So I'm guessing it would roll to $290M. I think $400M+ is definitely possible. Looking at the next possible rolls: 290-345 345-400 That's about a $185M cash value. Not too shabby if you ask me. I think I would take the annuity though.

Wisconsin man claims $14.4M lottery jackpot
Terry Peters, of Two Rivers, Wisconsin, became a millionaire Tuesday. Peters validated the sole winning ticket from Saturday's $14.4 million Megabucks drawing at state lottery offices. Earlier on Monday, Peters had stopped by the store where he purchased the ticket to check if he was a winner. He chose to take the lump sum cash payment of $7.6 million. He will receive about $5.4 million after taxes. Peters will take part in a news conference at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the GV Unimart in

'Top Ten' Reasons Why A 'Meet & Greet' May Not Be A Great Idea
This is FOR FUN. No need for anyone to get hot under the collar, just get some fun out of it. Keep it going, and no need to stop at ten. 35 people, 235 systems (every one of them a lock ), and only 3 people with enough cash to try those systems. Coming upon the' system of the century' and realizing it wasn't real smart to meet in a non-lottery state. Meeting in a casino state and never even getting to discussing lotto. I'm on a roll , The cards re running good , Hang on, t

Should PB MM be tax-free/lump sum
As to the first part of the question...Yes lottery winnings should be tax free...as they are almost everywhere else in the world. As to the second part...Yes Powerball and Megamillions should do away with the deceptive practice of advertising the annuity as the jackpot prize and the ridiculous notion of a cash value. No other business in the U.S. would be able to operate this way. Let's face it...U.S. lotteries do this because they believe...with some justification...that larger jackp

Mega Winners In Lotto
I'm not sure what you mean, Lacie. Can you elaborate? Last night Florida Lotto was $20 million. This is a pari-mutuel state, so the jackpots are always based on the money collected from ticket sales. 2 people hit, each with a QP, which is very unusual. I wouldn't mind sharing with them and ending up with 1/3 of the pot (about $225,000 a year for 30 years) The current Raffle tickets went on sale May 18th I believe. There are still about 830,000 tickets left out of the 1.5 million sold -
