Millions in lottery winnings go unclaimed each year
It is hard for some to believe, but even as some Americans dream of hitting it big in the Lotto, Powerball, and Mega Millions jackpots, for some it might have happened and whizzed by unnoticed.
Happens all the time, says Illinois Lottery chief Michael Jones. People misinterpret whether they won or lost. People misplace tickets all the time.
Jones said the lottery estimates about one percent of all lottery prizes go unclaimed. And, considering the Illinois games raked in about $3 billion

Florida Powerball winner claims $50 million jackpot
He's not taxed on $50 Million. $50 Million is an ANNUITIZED jackpot, the lottery doesn't hide that. He is taxed on his $34.2 Million. This is something you'd think you wouldn't have to explain to people on a lottery website, but people like riling themselves up for whatever reason.
Cash payouts (before state income tax) are 75% of the advertised CASH VALUE. Mega Millions CASH VALUE is usually around 56-58% of the advertised annutized jackpots. There's a Jackpot Analysis link on the main page

Will new tax hikes affect lottery pay outs
Yep the tax hikes will take a bigger bite of the prize.
I am real excited about it. Plus we have the inheritance tax increase to boot.
What is real exciting about lottery jackpots is the winners have that tax skimmed right off up front before they get their check.
Spread the wealth.

lucky
The Colorado Lottery has a 21-time jackpot winner, but his system for getting lucky in the Cash 5 game might just be that he and his family play constantly.
Tadeusz Krupa and his family have won $1,000 or more in Colorado's Cash 5 Jackpot on 21 different occasions, raking in a total of about $158,000 before taxes since December 2007,
Krupa has been so successful which include seven $20,000 jackpots,

MUSL: We have identified the glitch!
If I understand correctly, lottery folks get about 50 per cent of sales.
They can't lose, no matter what the winning combination is.
Sure, they would love more $300 million jackpots, but I doubt they are concerned about
so-called 'birthday' numbers.
