Proposed Mass. budget includes nonexistent lottery money
Issue highlights problem with budgeting based on speculation
When Massachusetts lawmakers approved a $24.7 billion state budget last week, they included $25 million in expected revenue from the multi-state lottery game, Powerball.
The trouble is, the state's bid to become a part of the game had been rejected and state Treasurer Timothy P. Cahill neglected to let legislators know.
To make matters worse, the inclusion of Powerball revenue in the state budget was based upon the notion that

Queens man claims $133M Mega Millions lottery jackpot
For transparency's sake, and publicity's, too, the New York State Lottery requires its big jackpot winners to step up before the cameras, and flash that giant cardboard check.
But many winners these days, with prizes surpassing nine figures, would rather not show their faces on television or in print, said Jennifer Givner, a spokeswoman for the state lottery. And so, when that moment in the limelight comes, the winners come and go as quickly as they can, leaving no time for them to elucidate

The Vermont lottery is 31 years old this year. Lottery revenues after expenses have grown substantially since its early days. But right now the recession is cutting into those revenues.
Back in 1978 the Vermont lottery generated just $1.7 million. That number had grown to $102 million as of last year. But like everything else, lottery revenues are down this year.
At The Middle Road Market in Milton, the customers are well familiar with the lottery games. The owners, state representative Ro

New York Lottery officials and a crew of convenience store workers are keeping their eyes peeled for the person holding a Mega Millions ticket worth $133 million.
No one has come to make a claim yet, said Dilip Patel, 35, who works at the Shiv Convenience Store on Hillside Ave. As far as I know it was a woman and she is really lucky.
There was only one ticket that matched all six numbers in Tuesday's drawing, officials said. The winning numbers were 25, 27, 35, 38, 39 and the Mega ball w

This place is crazy, White said. I think everybody thinks they're going to hit here again. They always say, 'Give me the lucky one.' You never know.
