Washington Lottery may add Powerball to lineup
Washington lottery players may soon be able to buy tickets for the Powerball multi-state game at their local grocery, deli or convenience store.
A proposal that will be heard before the Senate Ways and Means committee this afternoon would allow the Washington Lottery to link with other multi-state games without getting Legislative permission first.
Currently, the Mega Millions is the only multi-state game played in Washington.
This bill would allow the lottery to sell additional multi-

Arkansas Senate, House pass lottery bills, send to governor
The Arkansas House and Senate on Monday passed each other's identical versions of legislation to set up Arkansas' lottery to fund college scholarships.
The House voted 94-0 to approve Senate Bill 26 by Sen. Terry Smith, D-Hot Springs, and the Senate voted 34-0 to approve House Bill 1002 by House Speaker Robbie Wills, D-Conway. The bills now go to the governor, who is expected to sign them this week.

N.C. Supreme Court keeps lottery law in place
Lottery barely avoids being deemed illegal
The North Carolina Education Lottery can still operate after the state Supreme Court deadlocked Friday over whether the votes creating the games were lawful.
Three of the seven justices agreed Friday the lottery law was unconstitutional and three others upheld the law. A seventh justice, Mark Martin, had recused himself from oral arguments in the case in September and did not vote.
The 3-3 decision means a March 2008 state Court of Appeals ruli

Arkansas lottery approaches final votes this week
After months of negotiations, Arkansas lawmakers plan to give their final seal of approval this week to the state's new lottery and scholarship program.
Voters approved the games last November, and legislative leaders filed shell bills that same month to put in place the lottery, which will fund college scholarships for Arkansas students.
The House and Senate are expected to cast final votes Monday on the lottery measure, which calls for scholarships for any student with a 2.5 grade point

Lottery supporters in Nevada try again
Advocates of a lottery in the nation's No. 1 gambling state have faced a long run of bad luck in getting Nevada legislators to back the idea but they're betting the time is right for one more attempt.
Among the 200-odd bills and resolutions introduced by a Monday deadline was a measure to remove a prohibition against lotteries that's now part of the Nevada Constitution.
Similar proposals have been rejected by the Legislature more than two dozen times since 1970, although in 1990 Nevadans d

Proposal would rename N.C. education lottery
Move in response to Gov. Perdue taking education dollars from lottery
Some state lawmakers aren't happy with where some North Carolina Education Lottery dollars are headed and they're trying to do something to change it.
Mecklenburg County State Rep. Thom Tillis cosponsored House Bill 518, which would strip the education portion out of the lottery name.
Tillis said he and others formed the bill because Gov. Beverly Perdue said she plans to pull $50 million to $70 million from the Educat

Could be first state to offer both Mega Millions and Powerball
New Jersey could become the first to participate in two multi-state lotteries.
Two state officials who have been briefed on the budget Gov. Jon S. Corzine will present to the Legislature on Tuesday say it includes a proposal that New Jersey become the 31st state to offer Powerball.
The officials say the game could generate $10 million a year.

More Arkansas lottery details emerge
Depending on how much money it collects, Arkansas' state-run lottery could fund college scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $5,500 annually under a draft bill released to lawmakers Wednesday.
Discussing the draft in a legislative committee meeting, House Speaker Robbie Wills, D-Conway, said he and the other lawmakers who have been working on the bill believe scholarship amounts should be tied to the performance of the lottery, which is still unknown.
We believe the bottom line is this: Th

Arkansas lottery bill nearing completion
In Arkansas, the lottery is one of the biggest issues of this legislative session.
Speaker of the House Robbie Wills filed the first bill related to the issue, but it didn't have much in it. That's all about to change.
The speaker has been working on this very large document for months; in fact, he says he's learned more about how lotteries run than he ever thought he would.
It's in two parts: how the lottery operates and how the scholarships are funded and distributed.
The operation

Once again, no lottery for Wyoming
The Wyoming House has defeated legislation that would have created a state lottery and allowed Wyoming to take part in the Powerball lottery.
The House voted 35-25 against the bill Monday.
Proponents said the lottery would have raised $11 million a year for the Hathaway Scholarship program. The scholarship is awarded to Wyoming students who attend the University of Wyoming or any of the state's community colleges.
Rep. Allen Jaggi, R-Lyman, opposed the bill. Jaggi questioned whether the
