Lottery, casino shutdown cost N.J. millions
At Cafe Ole, a coffee house a block from the New Jersey capitol where business slowed to a trickle during a weeklong government shutdown, a new sign adorned the shop's door Monday. All of you are essential to us, read the sign, referring to the 45,000 state workers who flooded back into the city on the first work day after New Jersey approved a new budget, ending a weeklong government shutdown that furloughed workers, halted most state services and closed casinos for three days. The shut

US House votes to kill Internet gambling
Like with immigration, congress does the opposite of what the people want The House passed legislation Tuesday that would prevent gamblers from using credit cards to bet online and could block access to gambling Web sites. The legislation would clarify and update current law to spell out that most gambling is illegal online. But there would be exceptions - for state-run lotteries and horse racing - and passage isn't a safe bet in the Senate, where Republican leaders have not considered th

US House on the brink of taking away online gambling rights
Gamblers who prefer their laptops to blackjack tables won't like what Congress is doing. On Tuesday, the House plans to vote on a bill that would ban credit cards for paying online bets and could padlock gambling Web sites. The legislation would clarify existing law to spell out that it is illegal to gamble online. To enforce that ban, the bill would prohibit credit cards and other payment forms, such as electronic transfers, from being used to settle online wagers. It also would give la

Online gambling threatened by U.S. legislators
Editor's Note: Lottery Post is firmly against any attempts to limit the peoples' right to do as they wish on the Internet, including online gaming. Although anti-gambling lobbyists and legislators continue to sound the same alarm about gambling by minors and gambling addiction , we believe both of those arguments apply to such a small fraction of people that the rights of the vast majority of the Internet population are being taken away needlessly and carelessly. People have a right to do

New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine and lawmakers reached a deal yesterday on a state budget, six days into a government shutdown that shuttered casinos and threw more than 80,000 people out of work. Corzine said about 5 p.m. that the shutdown would end in 24 to 36 hours. The budget bills first must pass both the Senate and Assembly. He cautioned that the budget accord was not cause for celebration, because too many residents' lives had been disrupted. We have much more to do in the coming mon

N.J. Lottery players question logic of shutdown
Gov. Jon S. Corzine's decision to shut down state services created confusion for lottery players and those who sell New Jersey lottery tickets. Sharon Rush, who owns Macaro's Deli in Pennsauken, said she learned about it online. They haven't told us anything, Rush said. Our customers don't even know about it yet. Rush said shutting down the lottery and casinos because of fiscal woes simply doesn't make sense. Something that makes money for the government shouldn't shut down, sh

Illinois lottery privitization plan panned by tax group
An estimated $10 billion windfall from the sale or lease of the Illinois Lottery for state education funding would be short-lived, maintains a new report by the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability, a Chicago-based fiscal policy think tank. Introduced by Gov. Rod Blagojevich May 23, the proposal calls for funneling $4 billion in sale proceeds for school construction, text books purchases and new programs, such as full-day kindergarten and a longer school year. The remaining $6 billio

Illinois Gov. won't reveal data on lottery sale plan
The Blagojevich administration said Tuesday it won't release a consultant's work on how much money the state could make by selling or leasing the Illinois state lottery. The administration compared such a move to sharing playbooks with rival sports teams. Republicans have called for public disclosure. Gov. Rod Blagojevich last week proposed privatizing the lottery to provide a bonanza of cash for education over the next few years. He said New York-based consultant Goldman Sachs estimated t
