Urooj Khan couldn't believe his luck in spring 2012 when he scratched off a second lottery ticket at a 7-Eleven near his home on Chicago's Far North Side and realized he had won $1 million.
When he accepted an oversized promotional check from Illinois Lottery representatives with his wife and teenage daughter at his side, he spoke of how his winnings would help him grow his dry-cleaning business.
But weeks later, before he had collected the actual winnings, Khan died unexpectedly at 46.

Man sues California Lottery for not honoring winning $5M Scratcher ticket
A Long Beach resident is suing the California State Lottery Commission and a local liquor store for failing to honor a winning Scratchers ticket worth $5 million.
Ward Thomas is suing the commission and Los Altos Mobil for damages resulting from the loss and denial of the winning ticket.
In the lawsuit, Thomas claims on or around Oct. 16 at 8 p.m. he and his 16-year-old son Benjamin went to the store to buy California Lottery tickets, which they had done in the past.

A California teen is celebrating two big lottery wins in just a week.
19-year-old Rosa Dominguez was recently driving home from Arizona when she decided to make a pit-stop at a gas station in Paso Robles, California. While there, she decided to buy a few instant scratch-off tickets, and one of those was a $5 Power 5's ticket that would change her life. Dominguez scratched that ticket and discovered she'd won the top prize of $555,555!

La Ongkwan Pinyapap instantly won the top prize after scratching a 25X The Money ticket, the Illinois Lottery said Wednesday in a statement.

Florida man sues friend in dispute over $1M lottery ticket
A Lakeland, Florida, man is suing a friend who he says cheated him out of money from a $1 million lottery ticket.
Court records show John Rhoades filed a lawsuit against Tyler Scott, and Scott's girlfriend Brittany Causey. Wells Fargo Bank is also listed as a defendant.

Army soldier wins $5 million lottery jackpot
An Army soldier based in Fort Drum has won a $5 million New York Lottery jackpot.
The state lottery announced Tuesday that 36 year old Jesse Vonderhorst bought the winning scratch-off ticket at the Sunoco on Factory Street in Watertown.
Lottery officials said there will be no formal check presentation because Vonderhorst is deploying from Fort Drum on Wednesday. They didn't know where he was going.

Oklahoma governor approves increased lottery payouts
Gov. Mary Fallin signed legislation Tuesday that could lead to higher Oklahoma Lottery prize amounts and higher revenue to education.
Lottery officials believe the law will spur more purchases of instant-win scratcher tickets, which in turn will boost funding for public schools, CareerTech institutions, colleges and universities.
House Bill 1837 doesn't affect the multi-state lottery games like Powerball, but people who buy scratch-off tickets should see a change in July.

Two friends from Lido Beach, New York, won $8.3 million in the Lotto drawing on March 18, the New York State Gaming Commission announced Wednesday.
