Lottery ticket thief gets 20 years
It probably wasn't the prize he was hoping for.
Instead of a large cash payout, a Holyoke, Massachusetts, man was sentenced to 20 years in prison after admitting he stole more than $1,600 worth of lottery scratch tickets from convenience stores.

Georgia man celebrates $5 million lottery jackpot
A Columbus man has netted a win worth millions.
David Huff, 46, won $5 million playing the Georgia Lottery instant game Georgia's $500 Million Club.
Circle K Stores #6678, 215 Fourth St. in Columbus, sold the winning ticket. The father of four scratched the ticket just outside of his car. What he discovered, Smith said, was unbelievable.

Kansas, Iowa lotteries create first multi-state scratch game
The nation's first multi-state lottery scratch-off game will make its debut this summer at the Kansas State Fair.
The $10 Midwest Millions game also will be sold in Iowa.
Under Kansas Lottery executive director Ed Van Petten, the Sunflower State in recent years has been a frequent pioneer in new lottery games, including an Internet scratcher game and the novel $20 pocket slot electronic game card that rolled out last year and sold out fast.

Lottery dream shattered for N.C. couple
Randolph and Sandra Whitehead planned to get out of their small house, buy a car they could depend on and pay their bills. After all, they had just won $250,000 in the North Carolina lottery.
But those dreams came crashing down when their road to riches took a sudden U-turn.

Georgia man wins $44,000 at stop sign
Grady Strickland of Avera, Georgia, played the Georgia Lottery instant game 4's Galore and won a $44,000 top prize. He scratched the lucky ticket at a stop sign.
I said, 'I think I just won $44,000, and my wife snatched the ticket out of my hand,' Strickland recalls. She started crying and jumping up and down in the seat.
According to Strickland, 30, he immediately pulled over.
I was just sitting there staring at the ticket, he said. I was speechless. I couldn't believe it.

Woman gets 30 days for stealing lottery tickets
Used scratch ticket codes to pick out winners
A Heath, Ohio, woman was sentenced to 30 days in jail and three years of community control on Monday after she admitted to stealing lottery tickets she knew were winners.
Courtney L. Carson, 37, was found guilty of grand theft, a fourth-degree felony, after confessing to scanning lottery tickets' bar codes to see if they were winners while working at Heath Carryout between Jan. 15 and April 14, 2006.

Florida Lottery won't pay $500,000 winner, called 'misprint'
A Florida couple says they have a winning lottery ticket and they want their money, but the the Florida Lottery Commission isn't paying.
Ocala resident Joe Curcio thought he hit the jackpot on a scratch-off ticket that shows a prize of $500,000.
When he tried to claim his prize he received nothing at the lottery office.
Curcio said he bought a legitimate lottery ticket at the Turnpike rest area at Fort Drum.
The state said the ticket had a misprint on it.

Texas Lottery introduces $50 scratch ticket
Once, the biggest dreams in Texas only cost a buck.
Now, Texas Lottery officials are upping the ante on instant miracles to $50.
That's the price of the state's newest scratch-off game, dubbed $130 Million Spectacular, which goes on sale Monday and offers nearly $134 million in prizes, including three grand prizes of $5 million.

Lottery winner shortchanged by store
Man paid $1,500 on $4,000 scratch ticket
The lottery machines and scratch tickets were pulled from Kirsch Liquors in Worcester, Massachusetts, last month, after a man was scammed there when he received only $1,500 on a $4,000 winning scratch ticket, a state Lottery Commission official said.
The Lottery Commission will file a decision by the end of the month on whether to suspend the store's lottery license for 30 days or indefinitely.

Lottery Winner Succumbs to Cancer
A man who won $1 million in the lottery shortly after finding out he had terminal cancer has died.
Wayne Schenk died Monday at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Syracuse, according to the Baird-Moore Funeral Home. He was 51.
