This is scary. I cannot believe this was published, although I recall that in recent months, they discovered that a computer had randomly generated articles and they got cleared by peer review.
First, his "theory" is nothing new (it's actually a fallacy), and his website appears to be from 2001 (if we are to believe the footer)
Second, he cites himself in 2 of the 5 references in his paper. That's a big red flag.
Third, what are his credentials to be "mathematician"? I see Sao Pablo university listed, but not a degree or even a position in the math department.
Finally, his idea is basically choosing combinations that come from a pool of numbers that consist of a subset of combinations. Similar to what I was discussing the other day in jimmy's thread. If you visit his website and type in a set of numbers, it will spit out the probability of occurring....but the key here is that it is the probability of a combination that is made using those numbers...not the combination itself which you inputted.
In other words, it's complete bunk. If I use the combination 40-41-42-43-44-45 and the highest number available is 45 then of course the probability of occurrence using those numbers is low....there's only 1 combination! On the other hand, if I choose a mix of numbers, there are more combinations that can be made, which makes it seem like you have a better chance. But that's a fallacy! It does not improve your chances in any fashion. Only 1 combination is drawn and only 1 wins, which means I have 1 out of the total combinations available of a chance of winning. It doesn't matter which numbers I choose or how I mix them. The only way to increase chances of winning is to increase the number of different combinations played....aka buy more tickets.
Looks like another case of "this looks interesting, let's run the article without fact checking" on the part of several media outlets.
- If the chances of winning the jackpot are so slim, why play when the jackpot is so small? Your chances never change, but the potential payoff does.
- If a crystal ball showed you the future of the rest of your life, and in that future you will never win a jackpot, would you still play?
- I believe Joan Ginther ("world's luckiest woman") merely played lottery as a tax strategy. Evidence: zero prize claims through 10 years after her last Lotto Texas annuity payment!
