Poor people aren't animals that only need food and water.

Poor people need housing, health care, insurance, and many other things.

Poor people need heating, gas, electricity, and all standard utilities.

They also need protection from those who seek to oppress and exploit them.

It's an age old story and the poor need protection from them.

I once went to a gas station where a woman won $500,000.00 on a scratch off ticket. When I asked the clerk about it, he said, "She's a real *****. I sold her the winning ticket and when I asked her, "Where's my tip?, she said, "What tip??? I don't owe you anything." He then went on to say, "I hope she dies." Since I disagreed with him wishing death on another, I remained silent rather than telling him he shouldn't say that. I just paid for my gas and walked out of the store, and until now, kept that conversation to myself.

What a nutcase. That's probably the kind of clerk who would attempt to pull the one of the lottery scams that Tasha/Karen used to post about.

The sad thing is, he seemed pretty normal. You'd be surprised at how many people wish for the deaths and destruction of others in the world.

some ideas if you don't want to end up in a situation where a clerk is shaking you down for a tip:

1) buy your tickets online if your state allows it

2) in case you can't buy online, buy from a machine in a large store where the employees don't see you as a "regular."

3) check your tickets yourself (eyeballs or phone app) instead of having a clerk scan it.

4) if you win a small enough prize to claim in-store, do it at a store where they don't know you. familiarity emboldens clerks to ask for a tip.

5) never buy a lottery ticket at a store where you won before.

it looks like a really paranoid checklist, but it works.

The clerk could have bought that ticket himself. It was there all along just waiting for someone to buy it. Then someone else did and now he's mad cause he didn't get a cut from it.

Like Wayne Gretzky said, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take".

When playing the lottery the thing that should matter the most is: Are you winning more than you spend? Good Luck!!!

I actually don't think this is a paranoid list, rather a pragmatic one.

And wow that clerk is pretty entitled. I don't know how claims for scratch-off tickets work but for a prize that big I would've done it anonymous if I can.

how much human interaction you can avoid and whether you can stay anonymous or claim via a trust/llc depends on the state where you buy the tickets. artist77 has a stickied post in the jackpot forum about which states let you claim anonymously.

It really depends on how much iv won in this game. Most of these clerks act pretty strange as if they have a chip on their shoulder so tipping these guys would not be a thing to consider.
