Just Imagine: If Stalin Had a Smartphone ...

If Stalin Had a Smartphone

Suddenly technology has a centralizing effect.

A woman in Moscow taking a selfie with image of Stalin, on the anniversary of his death.

I feel bad for Joseph Stalin. He dreamed of creating a totalitarian society where every individual’s behavior could be predicted and controlled. But he was born a century too early. He lived before the technology that would have made being a dictator so much easier!

In the first place, he’d have much better surveillance equipment. These days most interactions are through a computer, so there is always an electronic record of what went on.

The internet of things means that our refrigerators, watches, glasses, phones and security cameras will soon be recording every move we make. In 2017, Levi Strauss made an interactive denim jacket, with sensors to detect and transmit each gesture, even as minimal as the lifting of a finger. Soon prosecutors will be able to subpoena our driverless cars and retrieve a record of every place they took us.

And this is not even to mention the facial recognition technology the Chinese are using to keep track of their own citizens. In Beijing, facial recognition is used in apartment buildings to prevent renters from subletting their apartments.

One Chinese firm, Yitu, installed a system that keeps a record of employees’ movements as they walk to the break room or rest room. It records them with blue dotted lines on a monitor. That would be so helpful for your thoroughly modern dictator.

In the second place, thanks to artificial intelligence, Uncle Joe would have much better tools for predicting how his subjects are about to behave. As Shoshana Zuboff wrote in her book “The Age of Surveillance Capitalism,” when you are using Google, you are not Google’s customer. You are Google’s raw material. Google records everything you do; then it develops models that predict your behavior and then it sells those models to advertisers, which are its actual customers.

Thanks to this business model, some of the best minds in the world have spent tens of billions of dollars improving tools that predict personal consumption. This technology, too, has got to come in handy for any modern-day Stalin.

Third, thanks to big data, today’s Stalin would be able to build a massive Social Credit System to score and rank citizens, like the systems the Chinese are now using. Governments, banks and online dating sites gather data on, well, everybody. Do you pay your debts? How many hours do you spend playing video games? Do you jaywalk?

If your score is too low, you can get put on a blacklist. You may not be able to visit a museum. You may not be able to fly on a plane, check into a hotel, visit the mall or graduate from high school. Your daughter gets rejected by her favorite university.

Back in Stalin’s day, social discipline was so drastic. You had to stage a show trial (so expensive!), send somebody to the gulag or organize a purge. Now your tyranny can be small, subtle and omnipresent. It’s like the broken windows theory of despotism. By punishing the small deviations, you prevent the big ones from ever happening.

Fourth, you don’t have to go through all the trouble of staging a revolution. You just seduce people into a Faustian bargain. You offer to distract them for eight hours a day with animal videos and relatable memes, and they surrender their privacy to you and give you access to their brains.

As online life expands, neighborhood life and social trust decline. As the social fabric decays, social isolation rises and online viciousness and swindling accumulate, you tell people that the state has to step in to restore trust. By a series of small ratcheted steps, you’ve been given permission to completely regulate their online life.

This, too, is essentially what is happening in China.

As George Orwell and Aldous Huxley understood, if you want to be a good totalitarian, it isn’t enough to control behavior. To have total power you have to be able to control people’s minds. With modern information technology, the state can shape the intimate information pond in which we swim.

I don’t want to pretend that everything will be easy for the Stalin of the 21st century. Modern technology makes it easier to control people, but it also creates a mind-set in which people get much angrier about being controlled.

When people have a smartphone in their hand, they feel that they should have a voice, that they should be broadcasting, that they should have agency and dignity. When they discover they are caught in an information web that is subtly dominating them, they react. When they realize that ersatz information webs can’t really create the closeness and community they crave, they react.

Angry movements and mobs arise spontaneously. What you get is a system of elite domination interrupted by populist riots.

Human history is a series of struggles for power. Every few generations, just for fun, the gods give us a new set of equipment that radically alters the game. We thought the new tools would democratize power, but they seem to have centralized it. It’s springtime for dictators.

Why We Need a Socialist Dating Market ? ?

Why We Need a Socialist Dating Market

John Elliott | March 13, 2019

Why We Need a Socialist Dating Market

According to Bernie Sanders, capitalism creates income inequality while socialism solves it. His fellow extreeist Socialist, Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, is proposing a 70 percent tax on income, also aimed at reducing inequality. In fact, wiping out inequality is one of the primary goals of those who ascribe to socialist ideology.

Given this, it is a bit surprising that Bernie and AOC have not rolled out a plan for one of the greatest fields of market-driven, pain-filled inequality that exists today: the dating market.

We all know how bad the dating market is. Young men and young women are floundering around, helplessly looking for a mate but failing to make it to the altar. Clearly, there is something afoot that needs a remedy.

Writing in Quillette, data scientist Bradford Tuckfield explains what’s really happening in this market by presenting data from the popular dating apps “Hinge,” “Tinder,” and “OkCupid.” The statistics are brutal. These dating sites show blatant discrimination resulting in immoral inequalities:

Yet another study, run by OkCupid on their huge datasets, found that women rate 80 percent of men as “worse-looking than medium,” and that this 80 percent “below-average” block received replies to messages only about 30 percent of the time or less. By contrast, men rate women as worse-looking than medium only about 50 percent of the time, and this 50 percent below-average block received message replies closer to 40 percent of the time or higher.

It’s very clear. In the dating market, men are inclusive and embrace diversity. Women don’t.

Tuckfield then goes on to discuss how the Gini Coefficient, an economic tool for the study of inequality, can help understand the dating market. The Gini Coefficient goes from zero to one. In the case of dating apps:

The Gini coefficient for men collectively is determined by women’s collective preferences, and vice versa. If women all find every man equally attractive, the male dating economy will have a Gini coefficient of zero. If men all find the same one woman attractive and consider all other women unattractive, the female dating economy will have a Gini coefficient close to one.

The results of applying the Gini coefficient to Tinder are simply shocking, a fact Tuckfield demonstrates by citing the following Tweet:

@devonzuegel

Tinder's Gini coefficient is 0.58, meaning "it has higher inequality than 95% [of] the world's national economies"

Tuckfield then summarizes the research:

If these findings are to be believed, the great majority of women are only willing to communicate romantically with a small minority of men while most men are willing to communicate romantically with most women. The degree of inequality in “likes” and “matches” credibly measures the degree of inequality in attractiveness, and necessarily implies at least that degree of inequality in romantic experiences. It seems hard to avoid a basic conclusion: that the majority of women find the majority of men unattractive and not worth engaging with romantically, while the reverse is not true. Stated in another way, it seems that men collectively create a “dating economy” for women with relatively low inequality, while women collectively create a “dating economy” for men with very high inequality.

There you have it. Although this unregulated market theoretically allows all men and women access to the dating pool, the discriminatory attitudes of the participants produce gross inequalities.

Given all the concern over white male privilege, these results should be a wake-up call. Men are the primary victims of this discrimination, for 80 percent of men on a dating app will be ignored by the women they contact.

Some people would say that women are just pickier. But isn’t “picky” just another term for prejudice and discrimination? Millions of men suffer rejection, discrimination, and heartbreak every day. Why do we focus on the gender pay gap, when a much bigger problem of inequality is staring us right in the face?

But don’t give up men – there is hope. Perhaps we just need to talk to AOC, point out the inequality that exists, and get her to propose a socialized dating market to end all this inequality and misery. If we’re going to be consistent and snuff out inequality, then this issue should be next on the agenda.

People Who Overcame the ODDS: Actor Keanu Reeves

More Keanu Reeves pics; I guess I must be really happy to see him back in the main stream.

Beiruti born actor Keanu Reeves' career ascended to a higher level when he appeared as a lead character in the film  Speed. It was the first time he had been a headliner in a big-budget production. But he turned down an offer to reprise his starring role in the sequel,  Speed 2. Instead he toured with his grunge band Dogstar and played the role of Hamlet in a production staged by a local theater company in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I admire him for being motivated more by love and passion than by fame and fortune. In my estimation, , you face a choice that in some ways resembles Keanu's, but in other ways doesn't

You shouldn't automatically assume that what your ego craves is opposed to what your heart yearns for and your soul needs.

Past Post Time For Jews To Abandon Democrats

Time for Jews to abandon Democrats

This isn’t your grandfather’s Democratic Party. Something has changed. Something dramatic. Something dangerous.

Can you even imagine if a white, male, Republican congressman made repeated racist remarks toward black Americans? And in response, the GOP issued an “apology” without ever apologizing? And a condemnation that was edited by the white racist congressman himself? And he turned the condemnation into a statement against black extremism? Huh?

Can you even imagine the response from black leaders? From the NAACP? From the liberal media? That would be the end of the GOP.

Well imagine no more. It just happened. Except this scandal involves Muslim Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar ranting hate speech against Jews. Omar was allowed to edit the Democrats’ response and somehow turned it into a condemnation of Islamophobia and white extremism. How disgraceful.

But this is about a much bigger problem than Ilhan Omar. This is about the entire Democratic Party. It is infected with a cancer called Jew hatred. The excuses, capitulation and dead silence from leading Democrats are worse than Omar’s comments.

And where is Nevada’s own Jewish-American U.S. Sen. Jacky Rosen? Quiet as a church mouse.

Where are prominent Jewish Democrat leaders such as Dianne Feinstein or Bernie Sanders? Cat got their tongues? Their lack of response is shameful.

Never forget, the Democrat leadership saw fit to put ignorant Jew-hater Ilhan Omar on the Foreign Affairs Committee, which overseas U.S.-Israeli relations and foreign aid to Israel. Then they refused to remove her. Unimaginable.

Never forget, the Democrat leadership left Omar’s name out of the condemnation.

Never forget, they allowed the offender Omar to edit the condemnation.

Never forget, they allowed Omar and other Democrat Jew-haters to turn this statement into a watered-down condemnation of Islamophobia and white extremism.

Pretty cool, huh? The person who slings the hate gets to twist the words so her cause is the one now being celebrated. She is the victim.

Never forget, Alexandria Ocasio- Cortez defended Omar again and again, eventually showing support by retweeting a supporter of Islamic terrorism.

Never forget, the Congressional Black Caucus members formed a protective circle around Omar so she wouldn’t have to answer questions from the media.

Never forget that Omar takes substantial lobbyist money from the Council on American-Islamic Relations, named by the U.S. government as an unindicted co-conspirator to Islamic terrorism.

Never forget, Omar’s biggest supporter is KKK leader David Duke, who celebrates her hate speech and calls her “the most important member of Congress.” Where do Democrats stand on this?

Never forget, Democrat Rep. James Clyburn’s statement that Omar’s experience is “more personal” than Jews whose parents or grandparents survived the Holocaust. Where do Democrats stand on this?

Are you awake my fellow American Jews? This is today’s Democratic Party. It’s time for a JEXIT away from a party that coddles, caves and embraces Jew hatred. It’s time to escape to the promised land of the GOP, where Jews are welcomed and appreciated; where capitalism is embraced; where extreme vetting is in place to keep bad people out who would do harm to Jews; where Israel is America’s best friend in the world.

Draw a line in the sand. The time for JEXIT is here and now.

What We Can Learn From the Turbulence of 1969 - A Good Read

What We Can Learn From the Turbulence of 1969

After protests arise against the Vietnam War at People's Park in Berkeley, California, in June 1969, Gov. Ronald Reagan calls in the National Guard to restore order on the UC Berkeley campus.

Victor Davis Hanson@VDHanson

Victor Davis Hanson is a classicist and historian at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, and author of the book "The Second World Wars: How the First Global Conflict Was Fought and Won." You can reach him by e-mailing authorvdh@gmail.com.

Fifty years ago, the United States was facing crises and unrest on multiple fronts. Some predicted that internal chaos and revolution would unravel the nation.

The 1969 Vietnam War protests on the UC Berkeley campus turned so violent that National Guard helicopters indiscriminately sprayed tear gas on student demonstrators. Later that year, hundreds of thousands of people filled the streets of major cities as part of the “Moratorium to the End the War in Vietnam.” In Washington, D.C., about a half-million protesters marched to the White House.

Native American demonstrators took over the former federal prison on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay and stayed there for 19 months, declaring it their own sovereign space.

In November 1969, the American public was exposed to grotesque photos of the My Lai Massacre, which had occurred the year before. The nation was stunned that American troops in Vietnam had shot innocent women and children. My Lai heated up the already hot national debate over whether the Vietnam War was either moral or winnable.

The liberal Left continue to push their radical agenda against American values. The good news is there is a solution. Find out more >>

Meanwhile, the trial of the so-called Chicago Seven, involving the supposed organizers of the riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, roiled the nation. The courtroom drama involving radical defendants such as Tom Hayden, Abbie Hoffman, and Jerry Rubin descended into a national circus, as the battle between leftists and the establishment went from the streets to the courtroom.

It was also the year of the Woodstock music festival. More than 400,000 thrill-seekers showed up on a small farm in the Catskill Mountains in August 1969 to celebrate three days of “peace and music.” Footage of free love and free drugs at Woodstock shocked half the country but resonated with the other half, which viewed the festival as much-needed liberation for an uptight nation.

Newly inaugurated President Richard Nixon characterized the national divide as the “silent majority” of traditional Americans fighting back against radical changes in culture and politics.

Under the strain of constant protests, the cultural and moral fabric of the country seemed to be tearing apart. Alternative lifestyle choices sometimes led to violence or death.

When a West Coast version of Woodstock was tried a few months later in Altamont, California, the concert ended up an orgy of murder, drug overdoses, random violence, and destruction of property.

In July of 1969, liberal icon Teddy Kennedy ran his car off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island, Massachusetts, and his young passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne, was left to drown. Sen. Kennedy did not report the accident to authorities until 10 hours later.

The next month, members of hippie psychopath Charles Manson’s “family” butchered seven innocents in Los Angeles, among them actress Sharon Tate. The Manson family apparently had hoped that the sensationalized murders would ignite some sort of racial civil war, thereby unraveling the United States.

Yet a wounded United States did not just survive 1969, but reached new heights of scientific, technological, and cultural achievement.

For the first time in history, a national economy produced more than $1 trillion worth of goods and services in a single year, as American nominal gross domestic product for 1969 exceeded that level.

America also put the first humans on the moon in 1969—and did it twice the same year, with the Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 lunar missions.

Boeing’s 747 jumbo jet made its first successful test flight in 1969. The 400-passenger airliner was so well designed and ahead of its time that it continues in service today, a half-century after its rollout.

It took some 35 years for a European company to introduce a competitor to the 747, the Airbus A380. Yet the latter jet has been something of a white elephant. Many airlines have stopped using the A380, and Airbus has announced that it will stop producing the jets in 2021.

American computer scientists first used a precursor to the internet in 1969, when computers at UCLA and Stanford managed to share an electronic network, known as ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network).

Fifty years later, what are the lessons of the chaotic year 1969 for our similarly schizophrenic age of polarization, civil disunity, and unprecedented wealth and scientific advancement?

America is such a huge and diverse country, and so abundantly endowed with natural and human resources, that it is capable of achieving unprecedented scientific, economic, and technological breakthroughs even as its social fabric is tearing apart.

Or, put another way, while the media highlights crime, protests, grievances, and civil disorder, a majority of Americans still go to work unbothered each day.

And in a rare society with a free market, constitutional government, and individual freedom, people continue to do amazing things even amid the utter chaos around them.

Dear Readers:

Just two short years after the end of the Obama administration’s disastrous policies, America is once again thriving due to conservative solutions that have produced a historic surge in economic growth.

The Trump administration has embraced over 60 percent of The Heritage Foundation’s policy recommendations since his inauguration. But with the House now firmly within the grips of the progressive left, the victories may come to a screeching halt.

Why? Because they are determined more than ever to give the government more control over your lives. Restoring your liberty and embracing freedom is the best thing for you and the country.

President Donald Trump needs all of the allies he can find to push through the stone wall he now faces within this divided government.

USA Socialism Is Not Sustainable-

CONSIDER: Socialism redistributes nations wealth, where as free entrepreneur capitalism creates new wealth $$$

Our Social Security is projected to exhaust it's trust in next 15 years and Medicaid in only 7 years. Therefore government must seize more wealth from active productive tax paying members of society to cover the shortfall.

Now since the our country is actively redistributing approx a $ trillion dollars a year more than it's collecting , its very possible we won't have to wit that long :-(

Thank you in advance for your kind consideration to the negative math reality

Hello America: Religious Cars Now Patrolling New York City :-)

Muslim Patrol Cars IN NYC]

We have said it for years, once Muslims get a stronghold, they take over.   It is already happening in NYC.

>>> Just in case you thought it couldn’t happen here.......

These "patrol" cars are real. Not Fake News.

Whether they are enforcing Sharia law yet, has to be determined.  The question is why do we allow them to mimic NY Police Department cars and uniforms? What would be the outcry if there were similar Jewish, Christian, Hindu, or Buddhist "patrol" cars??

We have a cancer growing in America. These things start out with "good" intent and lead "to not so good" results.

Read the Koran, and figure it out for yourself.............
