Fifth $1 billion+ jackpot won in California

After a run of 30 drawings without a jackpot winner, the 31st drawing of the multi-state Mega Millions game produced a single $1.269 billion winner last night when one lottery ticket sold in California matched all five numbers plus the Mega Ball.
It was the 12th time a lottery jackpot had grown to more than $1 billion, and the 11th time a single ticket won $1 billion or more.
For California, it is the fifth time a jackpot of $1 billion or more was won in the state, although one of those wins was split by winning tickets in other states. The last billion-dollar jackpot win in the state was on Oct. 12, 2023, when a California ticket won a $1.76 billion Powerball jackpot. The massive prize was claimed by a group of winners represented by Theodorus Struyck.
The winner of the unimaginable haul from last night's drawing will choose between being paid $1.269 billion in 30 annually-increasing payments over 29 years or the lump-sum cash value of $571.9 million.
The whopping jackpot is the 9th-largest the world has ever seen, and the 5th-largest in Mega Millions game history.
According to USA Mega's Mega Millions Jackpot Analysis, after all taxes are paid, the winner either will receive $800.7 million by the end of 29 years, or $360.3 million in cash all at once. California has no state taxes on lottery prizes, meaning only federal taxes will be imposed on the prize.
Per California law, the winner has 180 days from the date of the drawing to come forward to claim the prize.
The winning ticket was purchased at Sunshine Food and Gas on Rhonda Road in Cottonwood, California — a small town in Shasta County, which is located in the northern part of the state.
The Mega Millions winning numbers for Friday, December 27, 2024, were 3, 7, 37, 49, and 55, with Mega Ball number 6. The Megaplier was 3.
It's hard to imagine the winner getting much sleep Friday night, as they try to process winning such an unimaginably huge lottery jackpot awarded to a single ticket — the one they're holding in their hand.

The public will eventually find out the identity of the winner, as California does not allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.

Fortunately, even if you didn't win the jackpot, the Mega Millions game still offers another 8 ways to win lower-tier prizes.
In addition to the jackpot winner, 5 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize: 1 from Arizona, 2 from California, 1 from Missouri, and 1 from Texas.
None of the second prize-winning tickets was purchased with the Megaplier option for an extra $1. If they had, their prize would have been tripled to $3 million because the Megaplier number 3 was drawn.
The California second prize winner will each claim a prize of $787,543 because unlike all the other Mega Millions states, California awards all prizes on a pari-mutuel basis, meaning the prizes will change each drawing based on the number of tickets sold and the number of tickets that won at each prize level.
157 tickets matched four white numbers plus the Mega Ball and won $10,000. Of those tickets, 28 were purchased with the Megaplier option, increasing the prize to $30,000, and 23 were sold in California, where the prize was $9,487 this drawing.
In total, nearly 5.7 million tickets won prizes across the game's nine prize tiers in Friday's drawing. Apart from the jackpot, there were $36.3 million in prizes awarded last night.

The largest lottery jackpot ever awarded was on Nov. 7, 2022, when one Powerball ticket sold in California won a $2 billion grand prize. The incredibly lucky winner was Edwin Castro, who claimed the prize in February of 2023, providing minimal public information about himself. What little is known about Castro comes from public filings, and includes the purchases of houses one, two, and three, as well as being the subject of dubious lawsuits that are unfortunately predictable these days. (The lawsuit was thrown out in October.)
The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302.6 million.
With the jackpot being won Friday, the next Mega Millions annuity jackpot estimate for Tuesday's drawing is reset to its starting point of $20 million.
Mega Millions is currently offered for sale in 45 states, plus Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:00 pm Eastern Time. Tickets cost $2 each.
The Mega Millions winning numbers are published at USA Mega (www.usamega.com) minutes after the drawing takes place.

Now let's look at the East Coast and let's create an imaginary state and this imaginary state is called CaliFlorida . And this CaliFlorida is made up of Florida 22 million people Georgia 11 million people South Carolina 5 million people and North Carolina 11 million people and all this four states for this example are called one state Calflorida.
So now you have California on the west coast and you have CaliFlorida on the east coast.
Now think of all the Biggest winners in Florida and Georgia and South Carolina and North Carolina put them together in population size and you will see that California winners are directly proportional to CaliFlorida winners.
So am not saying lottery is rigged for California all am saying is California is a Monster state like Jupiter no single state can touch unless the east Coast form a New monster state called Calflorida then California will look weaker.
Another example Mike Tyson has the power to knock you out. Phil Ivey has the power to win poker and Mayweather Jr has the power to knock ✊ you out. All am saying is California has the power to Win a lot too not rigged just the situation.

You're technically correct that a winning ticket has never been sold in Detroit proper.
But if you recall, back in November 2010, a $129 million Powerball ticket was sold at Uptown Bookstore, which is literally just yards outside of Detroit's border in Highland Park (which is even more economically depressed than Detroit proper).
The jackpot was eventually split amongst a (mostly anonymous) syndicate, but I'm wiling to bet some of the folks in that syndicate were also residents of Detroit proper. The guy who officially claimed the ticket was black as well.

Interesting that you'd pick those numbers (did you actually add up the population for the 44 states?), because they're pretty close to sales proportions according to data from the site that shall not be named. Total MM sales from 11/26 to 12/13 (the most recent date with a state by state breakdown) were $302,997,897 (interestingly close to $1 for every combination). CA sales were $44,451,304, which is 14.67% of the total. Total sales from 10/25 through 11/22 were $298,299,215 and CA sales were $45,239,714, or 15.17% of sales. Combining the two, CA accounted for 14.92% of tickets from 1025 through 12/13. That's a bit more than 1 in 7.

No, CA sold 5 of the 13 tickets that claimed the top 11 jackpots. That's about 38.5% of the winning tickets. It's far better than the 14.92% of tickets sold by CA, but you're looking at 13 tickets out of many billions of tickets and expecting those 13 to be representative. Overall the probability of CA selling 38.5% of winning tickets is fairly low, but it's over a million times more likely than any of those tickets winning the jackpot.

I always play the power play and megaplier but come April the megaplier is baked into the recipe so to speak.
Concerning 2nd tier prizes .. and powerball ... I can see your point to an extent as it pertains to the 10x when the jackpot is 150 mil or less but to not have the 3x and 4x and 5x for matching the 1st 5 numbers is a shame IMHO.

In my state(Louisiana), the lottery web site has a Where the Winners Are feature that shows a map where large winning tickets have been sold in the last 60 days. The southeastern part of the state(New Orleans and Baton Rouge), are where the most winning tickets are sold because that is the most densely populated part of the state and generates the most sales. The same can be said for many states I'm sure.
I lived in a less populated part of the state when our lottery first started up and some people I knew were complaining about the big winners all being sold in New Orleans. Considering the population of Orleans Parish was several times larger than the parish I was living it made sense. After telling some of these people about how many more people lived there they decided they didn't like the idea of living in a place that crowded.

I am sure they can get an advance either from the lottery or a bank to tide them over while they wait for the entire amount.
You just don't get it. They sell more tickets than 20 small states combined. It cannot possibly matter what state you buy your tickets in. All that matters is the numbers you choose or the machine chooses for you.
