How are payments invested?
Not true, but I don't want to get into another argument. They are talking about the initial amount to make the lump sum payment, meaning that if they advertise $100 million, the cash option might vary. Once annual payments are chosen, you have a structured settlement and you will get the same check every year. People always choose to read things the way they want to, whether or not they understand the verbage. I hope you are not a financial planner or investment counselor, since you would be

Lump Sum or payments?
If it was possible to get a higher rate of return withoutsignificant risk, why wouldn't the lottery be getting that higher rateand offering an even bigger annuity? Of course it depends on whatyou mean by sigificant risk. The lottery is guaranteeing to pay theannuity, so they take a modest interest rate in exchange for very lowrisk. You can do the same by investing the lump sum in a savingsaccount, CD, government secuities, or any number of investmentsthat offfer a defined return on your inves

A Challenge to CASH Only from SirMetro
First, I preface my following comment with the fact that I do not look down upon anyone's job. Whether they dig ditches (which I have done) or work behind a desk (which I currently do), its all work and neither is any easier or harder for the individual. That said, I am curious as to how a grocery store Clerk (reference https://www.lotterypost.com/thread/141468.htm ) in another state will have any influence upon any Lottery anywhere else in the Country (reference https://www.lotterypost.com/

Wisconsin factory workers win $208M Powerball lottery
Good points are being made on all sides here, which is what tends to happen when the unhelpful only take the cash option, no matter what mantra is taken out of the discussion. Chuck32 makes some very good points about the annuity stream, and I would completely agree that the lottery has the clout and resources to come up with a much better annuity stream than anyone could get on their own (unless you happen to be Bill Gates). KY Floyd also introduced an excellent point about keeping the

Powerball lottery jackpot raised to $117 million
LottoLin - The annuity for MegaMillions is a standard annuity with equal payments each year over a 26 year period. http://www.usamega.com/mega-millions-jackpot.htm Powerball, by contrast, uses a graduated annuity, with lower payments in the early years and larger payments in later years, presumably to help offset inflation. It is also paid out over a 30 year period instead of 26. http://www.usamega.com/powerball-jackpot.htm (You'll need to click on annuity payment schedule under

Annuity or Lump Sum?
Thanks for the reply. It's an interesting dicsussion! I'm starting my first full time job this July and I've been doing alot of reading up on retirement investing and the financial services industry. And it seems that it's hard to find a fiduciary (someone who is legally obligated to look out for your best interests instead of their own) who can really do well with your money. I agree that if you know exactly what you're doing you can be doing very welll and definitely beat the annuity.

Cash Vs Annuity Payments
@ OldSchoolPA I do agree with you completely with many matters, like the principle that personal choices make our destiny. But when a investment plan sounds so good on a paper, I am sure works too, but only on a paper. Seriously, I would love to win jackpot and take cash and invest it, if such return of capital could be quaranteed as you suggested, but I can not.We few can. First I say it is dangerous to assume you will always get 5% dividend after tax in investment return calcula

Mega Millions and Powerball Race
It only made it past 160 because interest rates are up. The cash value of 72.9 million is only 44.7% of the annuity value. The last time it got past 150 the advertised annuity of 157 had a cash value of an even 72 million.

No winner again: Powerball jackpot hits $1.6 billion in longest-ever rollover run
Estimate was way off. They missed by even more in than MM missed back in October 2018 when they advertised a $1.6 billion jackpot and only managed 1.537. Depending on the metric you choose PB missed by almost 2 1/2 times as much as MM did. MM advertised an annuity increase of $600 million and missed by 10.5%. Powerball advertised a nominal annuity increase of $250 million and missed by 26%. Could be an indicator of lotto fatigue. Jackpot growth has definitely slowed down in general
