A scratch off with less big prizes and more mid-range prizes. Does it exist?
They have them once in a while, maybe a family of them. But they typically eliminate the top prizes and load up on the mid-tier prizes instead. They could still offer a top prize, in theory, but the odds would be horrible. Best to play another game instead for large top prizes. Other states have them too, and I believe our last one in CA was Power $777: http://www.calottery.com/sitecore/content/Scratchers%20Games/End%20of%20Game%20Info%20Folder/power-777-736 I did hit one of these types of

Mega Millions multi-state lottery to get harder to win in Oct.
you make it 50c a ticket, and 1 in 1 billion m that's $1 buys a 1 in 500 mill chance. people will see the 50c and huge jackpots and flock to it; ignoring the incredibly high odds. you could also make the min buy $2, keeping the shop keepers happy.

When did you start playing the lottery?
Well, when I turned 16 in the UK you can legally play the lottery. So as most people do I bought 1 ticket just because I could and lost, forgot about it then when I turned 18 I started playing the EuroMillions when the JP's are big, then now I just do the same only play when they are big. Obviously 1M would do me fine to set up a business or something, but with the odds I can't play every time so I just stick to big ones.

Playing the stock market
I haven't been on the board much lately, while I still buy my weekly tickets... I've been playing the market. To me, thats a better gamble with better odds. That reminds me, I need to buy my ticket for Tues and Wed's drawing, lol.

LottoNick56's Blog Entry - "Your Dream is Another's Reality"
If I had time and energy I would play pic 3 pic 4 games. Those have the best odds. On the predictions board on LP I get straight hits more than 50% of the time. But playing those means going to the store daily or twice a day. No time or that lol

Illinois Lucky Day Lotto adding midday draw in June
I like the idea if for no other reason that it will bump up the jackpot twice as fast. I don't play until the jackpot matches the odds, which is at $575k, so any way to get there faster will allow me more plays. Otherwise it can take a week or longer for it to get from $100k to $575k.

Mega Millions multi-state lottery to get harder to win in Oct.
I don't think they're making it hard enough, there will still be PLENTY of winners. If you want my opinion, I think the odds need to be increased to over 1 in 1,000,000,000.

Soaring Jackpots
How are the incraments of the jackpots determined? Powerball seems to grow by 10 million untill it gets into the larger jackpots. Are they based on percentage of ticket sales or something else? Hot lotto jackpots seem to crawl at $50,000 each time. For something with 1 in 29 million odds that seems a bit low, but it sells less tickets too.

6/49 record jackpot winner bought 2 of the same tickets
Ohio has a 649 game that has had jackpot $50M+(annuity) as do some of its neighboring states but PB and MM get all the attention. I think with the multi-states games getting more expensive some of the state games might get a little more attention when their jackpots get to $40M+ with their better odds and price.

Playing the Lottery as a Business
What you failed to mention/realize, is that unlike real businesses, there's nothing you can do to improve your odds of making the right choices/predictions or anything. There's no fixed expected return on investment in a business, but in the lottery it is always less than what you paid.
