Odds Don't Change When Jackpot Goes UP

How do you think buying fewer than all the possible combinations guarantees a jackpot?
I don't. I never even came close to saying I did. But you might want to pose that question to the magic dollar crowd, the folks here who honestly believe that each adittional dollar cuts the odds in half .
Pick 3
1000:1
dollar two = 100:1
dollar three= 10:1
dollar 4= 1:1, where's my payoff?
That is what some people here are saying, the only thing different is the game an

Odds Don't Change When Jackpot Goes UP
It's amazing how many folks can quote statistics, cite odds of this and that happening, etc.
You buy one ticket, you have one chance of winning the jackpot.
Buy two tickets, you have two chances of winning the jackpot and sharing it with yourself, etc.
I've read hundreds of posts and have not found one where someone has demonstrated that knowing the odds makes one bit of difference. In fact, the posts on this subject discourage folks from buying a ticket.
Keep it simple - buy a tick

Some people think $20 is too much for lottery ticket
For anybody with a lick of sense it isn't just how much the ticket costs and the odds. The potential winnings are just as important. You'd be a moron if you thought $20 was too much to spend for a 1 in 1000 chance of winning a million bucks, but you'd be an even bigger fool if you bought a $1 ticket with a 1 in 5 chance of winning $1.

Odds/Number Of Tickets
That's what I originally thought - that $10 spent on 1 1:5,000,000 Megabucks game would bring my odds down to 1:500,000. Granted 1:500,000 is still a large number so it doesn't guarantee me anything. We were also talking about the fact that for scratchers, you have to be in the right store at the right time to pick up the winning ticket unlike pick 3/4/5/6s where you can purchase the winning ticket at any store, but that's a topic for another forum altogether!

Florida Lottery holiday raffle game sold out
SC is doing this silly raffle also. What a great marketing ploy to raise even more money. The odds are still pretty ridiculous, aren't they?

Odds Don't Change When Jackpot Goes UP
Easy, theoryhetically each additional ticket would cut the odds established by the ticket before it in half, and you would run out of odds long, long beffore you ran out of possible combinations.
Even if the above did work (which is a fallacy, but follow) that would assume a solo hit, and you can never assume a solo hit. Granted mnost are, but all anyone with deep enough pockets would need to do would be buy a huge amount of tickets thinking they had a 'lock'.

What is up with MM/PB
Jackpots could be smaller because the number of people playing has decreased. I know quite a few people who have just stopped playing because of the odds, and they play scratchers instead. I think they should increase the payout for getting the mega ball, from $2 to $5.

Odds/Number Of Tickets
But are we not ruling out the possibility of duplicating the combination? I guess in a perfect world we could expect a different combination every draw until the total number of possible combinations is reached and then it starts over. However, we know that does not happen or seem to happen in the real world. Odds in my opinion are purely a guesstimate of what we think the possibility of performance will be.
Some odds makers have told me that indeed over time the total number of appearance

Odds/Number Of Tickets
Thoth
Well, thats one way of looking at it and a spiel for probabilities can be made to sound good, however the fact reamins that there can only be one winning combination.
So, when someone plays an increased number of tickets, they are also guaranteeing that they will have more losing tickets....there can only be one winner, everything else is a loser (we're talking a solid 6 for 6 here).
No matter how many tickets you play in any drawing, every line of numbers is up against the sam

Odds/Number Of Tickets
The odds against hitting a jackpot are based on the total number of possible combinations of the numbers in the matrix, only one combination can be drawn. (The number of numbers needed to match the top, and then the one number for the bottom) - Mega Millions and Powerball are actually two lotteries in one, don't forget that....
Every ticket you play reduces the number of combinations for your tickets by one combination.
Someone is sure to pop in here and say that buying a second tic
