Only 109,999 chances I won't win a million? - Here's my $20! - Gimme a raffle ticket!
regrnr, A little more. Let's take even the lowest jackpot game jackpot, in Illinois it starts at $2,000,000. So you bet a buck and the Lotto Fairy says Today is your day and you hit for a solo. Your dollar just won $2,000,000. The Lotto Fairy decides it's somebody else's lucky day and they hit the raffle for $1,000,000. The other person's $1 on Lotto won $2,000,000. That dollar became a two million dollar dollar. The raffle winner put up $20 to win $1,000,000. Each one of their doll

The Illinois Halloween Raffle
Todd, True. I'm not really anti-raffle, I'm just taking a real deep look at it. I just think of it as a bookie's wet dream, which it is. Illinois has the population to handle a 1,000,000 ticket raffle at $10 a ticket, I just wonder why they don't. Table games, slots, and Pick 5 , Pick 6, and 5 + 1 games don't have known results beforehand as far as will anyone win. Raffles do. Not who will win, but how many will win. That's a lopsided house advantage. Like I said, good luck all.

Which is the Smarter Bet?
Captain Lotto - and the person who buys 100 tickets might win nothing at all, not even a lower tier prize in the lottery, while the person who spends a dollar might win millions. I would never go to a store and buy 100 tickets, but it happens. There are people who buy piles of scratch-offs and stay in the store scratching and scratching for an hour. Then someone walks in 20 minutes after he leaves, buys 1 ticket, and wins $50,000 a year for life. Regarding prizes, when I see a game show I

Which is the Smarter Bet?
Captain Lotto, I know we all have our personal opinions, but you wrote It's also important to remember that your odds don't improve by buying more tickets. The odds are the same for every ticket you buy. Yes, the odds are the same for each ticket, but your individual chances of winning increase if you have 10 tickets instead of 1. You do only have 10 chances out of 7,777 but with a raffle, someone is going to win and a limited amount of tickets are sold. With a jackpot game like PB or

Financial Planner? Here's one...
Unless you make really bad choices you could expect to at least earn enough to turn your investment into 200 to 300k. That would be a more realistic expectation. Many people have said the first thing they would do after hitting a huge jackpot is contact a financial advisor but had they talked to Joe before buying their tickets, he would have suggested they would be better off investing that money and not play the lottery. Joe was comparing spending $10 a week on the lottery but if a pers

A dollar and a dream true for PB and MM?
Only one combination can win. That's true for MM and PB, but not all games, so why would you think that's the only factor in determing your odds? Take a look at the raffle games that have been offered lately. The odds of winning a top prize in those games is based on how many top prizes there are, but it's still about the proportion of tickets to winning combinations. In a typical raffle there may be 1 million combinations and 10 top prizes, for odds of 1 in 100,000. The odds would be exact

DC Raffle Sales...Not Too Good!
Todd EriciinMD asked in the OP what we thought of raffles. So I told him, sorry I didn't make something up that a state lottery selling raffle tickets could have used as a great marketing ploy, maybe downplay the fact that we're looking at a $20 shot to win $1 million as oppossed to a $1 shot to win tens or hundreds of millions. Numbers games don't limit lower tier prizes. The only way anyone can approach any form of gambling is to consider the money gone as soon as they turn it into
