Pa Match 6 Rolls 800,000 Cash
Quote: Originally posted by smd173 on February 26, 2004 Lotto Czar,So far I've bought 3 Match 6 tickets since it started. And I have not had 1 repeat number yet.Really, ? Our office bought 12 for tonite's drawing, and only one has 18 different numbers. What are the odds (similar to Keno) of matching at least one of 6 from 49 by drawing 6 new numbers out of 49 twice.? Probably not as high as I think. I would have to calculate them. But it does seem at least on every ticket at least 1 number

what if someones prediction won
I used to read news reports of winners hoping to learn how they picked their numbers and I must say there is either a total lack of imagination among big winners or they are advised not to go into details of any system strategy.Even if you told how you won and gave the reporters your system odds are it wouldn't get into print. Also big winners here would be subject to the same requests for handouts from lurkers as they would be at home before they move and unlist their phone. Would I tell how I

Probability of a rollover in PB and MM
Lottoczar,The probability of their being a particular number of winners, k, is given by p(k) = (m^k/k!)*exp(-m) where m is the ratio of tickets sold to the odds of winning. If you scroll through this thread you'll see the various means I have used to estimate (and corroborate) the values for sales and thus for the value of m.The sales of course, go up with increasing jackpot size.My values are not absolute, but I think they're pretty good approximations of the real situation. The key assump

Best scratch game?
I like the Instant Millionaire one that is available in Powerball states. I've played it several times and have only had one losing ticket so far - the others were for free tickets or in the $10 range, nothing big. But the losing ticket(s) you can send in for a drawing and they choose one person from each Powerball state to appear on a weekly show in Vegas with the grand prize being the potential to win a million dollars. They throw in 4 days in Vegas (at the Venetian hotel), coach airfare, a

Expected Return
Quote: Originally posted by goose on February 22, 2004 Are you calculating for the government?I am surprised you guys are so fond of it..so whats the point? Looking for a fair bet is the best thing that gamblers like you can do. The lotteries love players that stupidly buy tickets without even knowing the odds of winning, expected or potential value, and other important calculations. Some mathematically-inclined people are interested in the math of lotteries. To each his own. I have seen a lot

Question about jackpot amount
goose...1. advertised jackpot amount. (more money draws more players)2. population. the more people in the jackpot area, the more potential ticket buyers there will be... this is why multistate jackpots can start at 10 million as opposed to the lower individual state starts.3. advertising. If you live in a Powerball state, you have most likely heard Ray Charles singing It's America's game, the one and only Powerball ...4. *THEORY ONLY* Desperation... I don't have any actual stats, but it seems

Probability of a rollover in PB and MM
Your calculations would be correct if 13 million tickets were sold. Actually the minimum $10,000,000 jackpots typically sell in the ten million range. You can look up sales in various places, and find them from time to time. I back calculate sales by dividing the number of winning tickets by the overall odds of winning. This (understandably) gives a high standard deviation, however if you do it long enough, you find that the mean converges on the correct (cash) value, roughly 32% of sales de
