Did I possibly got scammed by storeclerk?
First of all, take comfort in the fact that you're not alone, many of us have had the same experience. Secondly, chances are the ticket was worth whatever the clerk paid you. It was so long ago there's probably nothing you can do about that particular ticket. But you can use it as a lesson learned. From now on, check your own ticket before you take it in. Ask for the receipt on all winning tickets if you have any question about the value. I know a clerk who routinely asks How much did you

watch out for NYS retailers Some are scamming you big time
the store was located on 101 ave and 86 street on the corner. It was known as Peters because the man that owned the building was named peters and he had a store there in his hey day named Peters. so we still called it Peters but that was not the name after he leased the store but kept the building. The new owners were middle eastern and the clerks name who was running the scam was named Jeff. The 2 actual owners i do not remember their names. But that was the location. It was a very big store bu

Store owner tried to scam woman out of lottery winnings
Hi Mediabrat, I wrote the original post, and I agree that the two possiblities you offered are very plausable. Although I hadn't given it any thought, I'm sure stores do train clerks to be on the lookout for players trying to scam the clerk. It's a two way street. The stores, just like players, have to protect themselves from unscrupulous people. There's no question they do get ripped off by the public all the time. Also the woman behind the counter very well might have taken offense to

Store owner tried to scam woman out of lottery winnings
Two possibilities: 1.) In her training, she may have been warned about lottery players trying to scam clerks. She may have thought that by telling her you had a $22 winner before she scanned it, you were trying to condition her to skip checking the ticket and just hand you the money. 2.) She likely picked up on your non-verbal accusations of her being a thief. She was probably thinking -- but wouldn't say it for fear of losing her job -- How dare you accuse me of trying to steal from you s

Jamaican lottery scams spread despite US crackdown
The 88-year-old retired Coast Guard officer hadn't been outside the U.S. in decades. Yet phone calls started pouring in from Jamaica, dangling the prospects of huge winnings from an international lottery that he had won. There was a catch, of course. He had to send a check to pay the tax on his winnings. He wired the money to Jamaica. Soon he was ensnared in a scam that may cost him his home in an assisted living facility outside Seattle. It's been heartbreaking, said Ruth Wilson, a Seatt

NY lottery winner charged with welfare fraud
I concur. Our military deserves the pay it receives. I suppose I could have written my post more clearly. Our welfare system is broken. There is not a time when we should be giving unrestricted $$$ to those who have been declared by some moving-target formula - as needy. If they are needy for food/nutrition, then give them food through the local food bank or excess food from farmers, or food that has a short shelf-life remaining. If they are needy for housing, then give the money directly to tho

N.Y. man lost $100,000 in lottery scam
I give telemarketer calls to my g'kids and let them practice 'phone etiquette' with them and the 'house rules' (no personal information given out, be polite, deflect any questions that are answered with truthful yet evasive answers - as its none of their business). They still get LOTS of practice. Eventually the child will come back and tell me that the rude (man/woman/machine/person) hung up on them; I assure them that they will get another call to practice with, and the child goes away hap

5 Reasons You Don't Really Want to Win all that Lottery Money
Always Artist77, always. Re: The slip fall scam, this is kind of funny. A couple playing on an Illinois riverboat casino lost a few hundred bucks and decided they were going to have the casino give them their money back, and then some. (These people did not have a clue about surveillance). They went to the secoind deck and the guy put a banan peel on the deck, then knocked on a door that let out to the deck. His wife came out and faked a fall. Then they called for security and a EMT. Se
