Yes, if you could know a priori that 31 would be picked. But looking forward, you cannot know that. So your true odds are the probability of matching a combination with 31 (1/1,712,304) times the probability that one of those combinations is drawn (1,712,304/13,983,816). That is 1:13,983,816, the same probability as matching all 6 randomly. So your odds a

Any CA Hot Spot (keno) players?
Luckily the discrepancy was they were paying a few bucks too much, so I didn't make a fuss. ;)
But still, I don't like it when things don't add up properly. So I looked into it some more and found that the CA Lottery website has some incorrect prize values shown. I notified them of this but they haven't responded yet. Some example prize values I have come across that are wrong, for 10-spot at least (which is all I play) are:
match 6/10: shown on website as $12, should be $15
match 6/10+

Do some number combinations have better odds?
The odds of just 17 hitting are 37 to 1.
And the odds against Black are 1.11 to 1, but that doesn't increases the chance of 17 winning.
But that's pretty useless information taken alone, since you've made 4 other bets along with it.
I explained the real effect; it lowers the chances against by one and lowers the payoff by $1 for every additional bet. Do you really believe betting on Black will decrease the odds of a bet on 17 against winning?
It's that you are saying that 6.6 to

Do some number combinations have better odds?
If it makes you sleep better believing playing those 4 extra numbers give 17 a better chance of being the winning number, there is nothing I can say.
Again, I never said that or made any claim remotely similar to that.
The odds against winning the accumulative bet become 6.6 to 1, but the odds against 17 winning are still the 33 to 1 because the accumulative effect reduced the number of losing outcomes, but doesn't increase the chances of 17 winning.

Odds on Misinformation
Thanks for your response nickbrownsfan.
1) Knowing what numbers are being played a lot is good info to have. No sense betting on numbers that will likely produce sharing of the pot. In my first post I suggested that, from what some players had told me, they don't bet on sequenced numbers because they believed the odds were worse and sequences never hit. Of course we all know the odds are the same for sequenced and unsequenced numbers. But my sample of people saying they don't play sequenced n

Buying More Tickets Does Not Increase Your Odds.
People stop at what they can afford
People with serious money don't need to play the lottery. You're making the assumption that they would play just because they may have the money to reduce the odds. You assume that they don't have better ways to invest they're money.
Why would anyone wager $175,000 on a 1 in a thousand chance?, You're defeating your own argument. Even if this imaginary person had the cash to widdle the odds down to a 50/50 bet by playing 87,000,000 combinations, It's sti
