You're right about most of this mystical math stuff being completely base dependent, and there is nothing special about 10 other than ingrained convention. I did this double-and-sum-digits process in base-12 starting with 1 and got another neat pattern. You need to use some symbols for ten and eleven in base-12, so I chose A and B which are standard in computer science to be consistent with hexadecimal.
