Getting Wacked by Mega Millions
Greg,
There are games with better odds like WV Cash25 (6/25) but the top prize is $25,000 and matching 3 pays $1, you can't have better odds and larger jackpots. Ohio RC5 (5/39) had a top prize of $402,000 tonight and matching 3 pays $10, but matching 5/5 isn't easy either. There are lots of games with better odds than MegaMillions if you're not playing for a $12M+ jackpot.

pick 3 vs. pick 4
Good poll Mike, one of your best.
I voted pick 3 because one should be able to walk before they run. Same with high odds games...if you're not beating 1000 to 1 odds how are you going to beat 500,000 + to 1 odds?

Odds 101
Floyd: Was it still possible to calculate the odds of drawing the ace of spades?
Yep.
Floyd: There are 51 cards that aren't the ace of spades and 1 card that is, so the odds are 51:1 against.
And if you draw another card, there are now 49 cards that are not the ace of spades, so odds the are 49:1.
Floyd: would the odds against winning still be 9999:1 or would they change?
One 4 digit number is drawn and 9999 are not so the odds are always 9999:1.
Floyd: That makes the odds o

The Tao Of The Lottery
The less concept people have of the odds against them, the more money they play.
With millions to one odds against the first dollar played there is no such thing as an addittional dollar halving those odds.

Odds 101
Why not? Odds are based on probability, and probability is determined by the possible combinations or permutations. If there are 36 possible combinations and 3 of them have identical results then the odds for that result are 3 to 33 or 1 to 11.
If you want to talk about what the house pays for a successful bet you shouldn't confuse the matter with discussion about combinations or probability unless you want to contribute the the confusion abouthow odds are figured.

Oklahoma instant tickets.
I'm in Oklahoma right now visiting and I thought I would stop and pick up some powerball and scratch tickets. I tried the $5 and $2 tickets. I came out winning a good bit on a $2 ticket.... (I won $40.) However, the $5 tickets aren't as good as I thought they would by after looking at some stats on the odds. On the $2 ticket the overall odds are 1:4.8. On the $5 ticket the odds are 1:3.4. However, in every pack of $2 tickets there is one $40,$20, and $10 winner. The $5 tickets only have

Just a couple of points:
I don't want to hold the lottery to a different standard. I want to hold them to the same standard any other business is held to. Most notably truth in advertising.
The bottom line with me is this...It's clear Powerball doesn't want winners at the lower level. They want to advertise a great minimum pri

Lotto South v Lose for Life
As far as being better than one that doesn't exist, there comes a point where your better off just trying your luck at a blackjack table. Assuming you know how to play blackjack correctly, your odds of winning a hand should be 50/50. The odds of winning 14 in a row would be 1 in 16,000. If you start with a $100 bet and double up on every win (1st bet = $100, 2nd = $200, 3rd = $400, etc..) you could take home 1.6 million. Still very long odds, but I would have to stop after winning the first

What are the odds?
The odds of a pair hitting are always 1 in 100. The odds never change. Probablities are a different matter. However I only track Ohio numbers. I wish 540 had hit in my state yesterday; I would be $600.00 richer. The 40 back pair has not hit in Ohio since February 11, 2005. WHAT ARE THE ODDS OF THAT????????? This is the first time I've seen a pair go over a year without hitting.
