Mathematics and the Lottery
I cannot offer a math formula. But I can offer an algorithm, implemented in Excel VBA below.
But first, it might be useful to clear up a misunderstanding. The number of combinations -- COMBIN(59,5) -- is 5,006,386, about 5.01 million. I don't know if your 5.1 million or so is a typo, or if you misunderstand how the odds are computed. The odds (probability) of matching 5, but not the powerball is about 1 in 5,153,632.65 because it is 34 in 175,223,510. That is, 1 in 35*COMBIN(59,5) / 34.

My Pick 4 Wins
Hi All,
I just started playing the Daily4 game in California at the end of March. ( I won twice at $200 in March) Since then, I have had 2 big hits and another $200 hit. I am wondering if I am having beginnings luck - or - if I have done my homework right prior to playing.
I am glad I found this forum to share with others who have caugth the Pick 4 fever. (The odds are way better than the Pick 5 games, imo.)
Sincerely,
DKing

is anyone making an income from lottery
I've spent a long time trying to explain to Stack WHY this happens,
Speaking of Delusions of Grandeur, almost every paperback gaming book (some from the 1960s) has a section simply explaining the house edge as the difference between what the house pays off on a bet and true odds. For every $1,000,000 in wagers, the house should keep $50,000 with a 5% house edge.
Do you really think a player who walks from a Craps table with $9500 profit wants to hear your opinion why they should have $50

How'd you come up with 2 million?
I'd estimate closer to 500K to 900K.
It could also be luck. I don't actually know, I just think it's more likely he gambles a whole lot. Since there are some amount of wealthy people who like to gamble. I never said it's impossible he's one of those few lucky ones who is a few standard deviations away from the house edge, which means he's really just winning so much from luck.
I just think it's far more likely that he's independently weal

why even mention the house edge that doesn't apply the same to every individual player?
Here's the problem with the way you're thinking about the house edge. You are being results oriented, which, for a professional gambler, will ultimately lead to their downfall.
The house edge DOES apply equally to everyone, assuming the game has flat payouts. That's because the game is (in the example of a P3 straight bet) a 1 in 1000 chance to win, and pays out as 500 for 1. So a person who

Way to ignore the post where I tried to summarize why betting systems don't change the edge, but change the risk. I don't need to see what the betting system is, if it does nothing to change the odds of the game you're playing, then the edge is still there. It doesn't matter how you change your bet, because you're changing a part of the equation which doesn't affect the edge.
Formula is Edge*Bet= Expected Value.
Changing it to Edge * X Bet only changes the answer to X * Expected

How do I win on a lottery ? The Top 20 Lotto Systems
Thankyou
I have now contacted via the contact us page to enquire about posting links to my author page etc...
In terms of sharing tips and ideas, I am still finding my way around your forum but will certainly join in when I get settled. I quite like a good flutter on pairs and trios and within the book is the national lottery all time pairings table which, if playing on 60:1 odds is generally good at producing returns.
The top 7 pairs in the current table have missed for several draws a

What are the odds against both the PB and MM 175 million to 1 jackpots being won before the 1st of June?
Will you still give me 799 to 1 on a $100 bet against that happening?
When did I ever offer you that? I didn't say I'd bet 799 to 1 on anything you want.
I'm not even gonna respond to the rest of it, you're clearly ignoring my point, which is that the math can calculate the probabilities of all those events (streaks, etc.) It is ALL math. Timing is just the way your perc

First of all I'd like to say thanks to four4me for posting as well as everyone else!!!!!!
@grwurston. That is why the 1569 guess yesterday....had a pair in the morning and a trip in the evening. The $1000000 questions are these ..........What pair will show? What pair do you dance with on the next draw???? Basically there is a 1/100 chance of any pair to repeat and then you have another 1/100 to be correct on the dance partner pair. Anyway back to the subject at hand, Tuesday's night pull 732
