pick 3 probability
Quote: Originally posted by Bertil on May 20, 2004 By what formula does one calculate the odds of winning a pick3 type game if one buys 100 random tickets? Would it be 10%?Suppose the lottery sells only 5000 random tickets, what % of all numbers are likely to remain not sold?If every one of the 100 tickets is unique, then the odds of winning are exactly 10%. If you buy quick picks, you may have one or more duplicates, so the odds of winning are 9.5%.The formula is (1-p)^N where p = the probabili

Canada to change Lotto 6/49
That free play idea is a great way for lotteries to offer more prizes and lower the overall odds without giving up any extra money. When I was younger, I bought car tires from a department store that sold tires the same way. They would take a 30,000 miles tire and sell it for $20 more and guarantee it for 50,000 miles and when it wore out at 30,000 miles, they would sell you a new one for a $20 discount. I thought I was getting a bargain for years. Ohio did the same thing with Super

Tips on Picking Numbers
White ball and Powerball numbers have a different frequency of rolling over. Statistics are posted on the Multi State Lottery Association websites. Pick the numbers which have the highest frequency. Similar to a slot machine, the higher frequency rollover number will have higher odds of matching. How long can you afford to stay in the game is the question? The key to staying in the game is like playing bingo. Bingo player prefer playing with multiple cards to increase their odds. Well, it can b

$300.00 worth of QP's
Quote: Originally posted by JohnC on May 08, 2004Hi BobP,In Australia, Powerball tickets cost 50 cents a game. A Powerplay 6 is a ticket with six numbers from which the first five came (any-five-from-six) plus one specific number for the Powerball.e.g 10, 14, 17, 23, 31, 40 (from which the first five numbers must come), plus say 37 (which must be the Powerball). The odds of winning Powerball over here are just under 55 million to 1 and as this guy bought six games, the odds against him win

Buying more tickets = reduced odds
This is the last I'm going to post on this topic: My point is that the odds stated for a lottery game compare two quantities of the same kind; 1:120,000,000 is a comparison of one ticket combination out of 120,000,000 ticket combinations. The odds are expressed in a ratio. The mathematical rule for a ratio is that it is expressed in its lowest terms. So we are mistaken when we express the purchase of 2 tickets as changing the odds to 2:120,000,000. To do so violates the mathematical rule, t

Buying more tickets = reduced odds
I sent in this question to Powerball.com and they provided the following answer:Q: CAn a person effectively reduce the odds of winning a powerball jackpot by usingthis formula?; 1:120,526,770/N, where N is the number of tickets purchased. Inother words, can 2:120,526,770 be reduced to 1:60,263,385, where 2 is the numberof tickets purchased?A: You cannot purchase enough tickets to effectively reduce your odds in thisgame. Instead of thinking about it as odds, think about it as numbers. There a

Best way to predict numbers
Quote: Originally posted by prob987 on April 08, 2004Yeah, I do. But I think our problem lies in that we are talking about two different situations. I am buying two quickpicks, as described in my original post, to demonstrate that one can in fact routinely experience beating the odds of 1 in 1.8 X 10^16. I am not doing it to see if I can produce two equivalent tickets. The odds of producing a quick pick of arbitrary sequence is indeed exactly equal to winning the lottery. The odds of prod

Question
Welcome, Platinum298! I'm a PowerBall player for going on two years now. They don't have MegaMillions where I live so I don't have interest in knowing about its odds, I guess. I'm assuming the MegaMillions odds might be higher because more people play it? Don't know if it would have anything to do with their mathmatical differences (any corrections welcomed). I just enjoy picking PowerBall numbers, which to me, gives me better jackpot odds than getting a Quick Pick. At least, I feel like I h
