Yes, yes, yes, and no. Car starter works or doesn't. I like playing the lottery, but also have some inkling of statistics. Over the course of many years of play, I've won roughly equally with self-selected numbers and quick-picks. How I've chosen numbers, over the long-haul, hasn't made any meaningful difference. It's fun to look at past draws, try different things, etc, but ultimately the odds are the same, regardless. The final outcome after the 7 test spins can cut both ways equally. So

There's a large element of superstition involved. Players like to have some illusion of control. Though tracking past random events may be worthwhile for predicting future, random events in limited instances to a limited degree. What I am trying to figure out and certainly don't have the money to play is........ What effect does removing the sets of numbers from the 11,238,513 possible combinations (excluding the Powerball number) if you take away the sets of numbers that contain 3, 4, or 5 consecutive numbers. Such as 1.2.3.17.52 or 22,22,23,24,61 or 1,2,3,4,5.....you get the idea. That would be one heck of a huge spreadsheet / pdf. Not sure what good it would do, anyways. Most every idea one can think of trying to beat the lottery has been studied, tried, etc numerous times by numerous people. From what I recall, there have been attempts over the years in buying huge swaths of combinations, selected mathematically as you're suggesting, for various in-state jackpot games. I agree with you all that a $20 ticket with a lower jackpot of $1m with amazing $500 odds, and better lower tier prizes would be much more favorable. If people could just stay on topic, things would be so much easier. I highlight which part of the posts I'm commenting on so there is no confusions, but now I have to repeat what I said in a previous post. A reason why the size of the jackpot matters to some players is what I previously said, the jackpot rolled, nobody won a $1 million second prize, and 20 only tickets beat odds of 1:739,688 by matching 4 + 1. I agree with everything you said, with the exception of granted it is not a life changing score how is 700K not life changing? maybe to someone who is wealthy and has a net worth of millions already, it would be a drop in the bucket. For me, it would be a major game changer. someone could take that money not spend it, invest it wisely and live off the dividends. that means I would never have to work for anyone else as lone as I lived!
