Powerball lottery jackpot hits $200 million
KY Floyd: If you aren't going to play regularly the sensible strategy would be to make your occasional plays when the jackpot is high. Even for a regular player, the sensible choice would be to concentrate your plays on higher jackpots.
I just did a thought-provoking calculation. It's based on the Pick 3, but applies to any lottery.
Your chance of winning is better if you buy 10 tickets for a single drawing than if you spend the same money buying a single ticket for each of 10 drawings. So

realistically
But the lottery is also a dream, a chance, a possibility. As I tell the Sons of Discouragement who pooh-pooh the lottery because of the odds: the difference between a good chance of winning and a bad chance of winning is infinitesimal compared with the difference between a bad chance of winning and no chance of winning at all. That teeny-tiny possibility is worth a buck. At least to me.

Tonight's Fla. Lotto drawing first to let players increase jackpot
Also first drawing to use new playslips
Lotto players who buy their tickets on the day of the drawing need to give themselves a few extra minutes to get tickets for tonight's drawing. Tonight's is the first drawing since the Florida Lottery made changes to Lotto and the old play slips no longer work.
The big change is that players can spend $1 or $2 extra to increase the size of the Lotto jackpot.
Tonight's jackpot is $3 million and a $1 play buys a chance to win that amount or a cha

Probability related question
D D,
I sympathize. I only spend about $4 per week. I buy one ticket for each drawing of the Powerball and the state lottery. I have to drive out of state to get them, so I buy a 15-draw multi-draw ticket once every 7 1/2 weeks. On the days that I buy my tickets, I pick up a few scratchers; my wife likes them, but I admit I'd probably buy a few for myself if she didn't. :)
The odds of winning are not good, but they are zero if I don't participate at all; and the difference between good and

The Lottery and Desperation
So, I am obviously new to this forum and just like everyone else here, would love to someday win the big one. As I have been searching this forum I have noticed an underlying theme, a lot of the people on here seem to be really desperate to win.
For the heck of it, I just clicked on Pick-3 forum and had to go back 5 pages just to see all the posts made today by people posting about a game where the big one is $500. Since most people consider $1 million or more to be the big one , let's comp

Which is the better bet ?
Hi,
Thanks for the replies.
Just a couple thoughts for discussion purposes.
1) Just because you have increased your odds of getting the winning by playing 25 numbers, there is no guarentee that those winning numbers will end up on the same line.
2) For arguments sake, lets say the winning numbers were 1,2,3,45,46 and neither example hits the bonus number. If the payoff for hittting 3 numbers is $10, then example #1 got $50 less the $5 buy in. Example #2 got $10 less the $5 buy in. S

Is statistics method really useful to predict drawing number?
Some of you think too much.
A birthday is just a day, a date, that has a number assigned to it. OF COURSE one of these will hit once in awhile, the odds favor it. Nobody ever said 'birthdays don't win', but it's just as one said: you limit your numbers to 1-31, you are really limiting your chances. So you need to play your birthdays, and a few games not made up of birthdays.
Same for race car numbers, NBA Player numbers, NFL, NHL, and any other 'number' you want to assign something to.
