** The Stupid Tax **
Warren Buffett refers to the lottery as the stupid tax .
The odds of picking the right three digits in a pick 3 game is 1000 to 1 and the payoff is $500 so a dollar bet becomes a 50 cent bet. When Buffet buys stock, he gets dollar for dollar value on his investment when a pick 3 player only gets 50 cents on the dollar.
If you had a thousand horses lined up on a field for a race, and you had to pick three winners, it would be almost impossible, even with historical anaylsis, to pick 3.

Do some number combinations have better odds?
RJOh,
I wonder how many 5 matches you'll get with this set in the NEXT 798 draws?
Have you had a chance to run the [29..56], [odds], and [evens] against your 798 lines of data?
Your What happens most is most likely to happen again. is being quoted a lot in this thread.
What specifically did you mean by that?

Do some number combinations have better odds?
People buy QPs because they want a piece of the action and a chance at winning millions. I really doubt the majority of them are interested in what they can expect to win by not winning the jackpot and run a Monte Carlo simulation. The mathematicians would have us believing a player who bought 100 tickets on a $300 million jackpot, did it to get 3 to 1 odds of matching 3 numbers and collecting 7 bucks. This discussion isn't about why people play lottery games, but discussion about other ways to

How do you determine which scratch-off to buy?
Be carefull with that method. I've been watching a game here in MO that's been out for 7 years. They quit supplying retailers with the ticket about 2 Months ago and put out the 180 notice to collect on DEC 31st. I was told when they stop supplying retailers they pick up the remaining tickets when there sales rep's bring them new tickets. The game is a $10 game called lifetime riches with a top prize of 50k for life or $800,000 lump sum.
Like you I looked at remaining prizes and set out on a

Do some number combinations have better odds?
Riscknight,
No, I haven't read The Black Swan. However, I did read his earlier Fooled By Randomness, wherein he deals with Black Swan events. I've read that he significantly expanded his treatment of the Highly Imporbable in this later book, and I hope to get time to read it some day. Based on some of your recent posts I can see why you might be interested in Taleb's work. I just hope you don't get mired down with some of the other posters here who believe they might be able to make one of th

Fallacies, and two REAL ways of improving your chances
I just received a newsletter from Steve Player outlining a new system for Pick3.
It basically says you can win $1,900,000.00 in ten days playing your state Pick 3 game.
All you have to do is pick any 2 different digits correctly for the next draw, and he will provide you the 54 combos to play.
Then he says it gets better that you have 5 chances to get the 2 digits correctly and still make money with this system.
It only costs a person $54 to start, then as long as you can pick 2 digi

I'll say this again, the same people who won fell into that .1% and they are just like you and I.
Very true.
And the 99.9% who will never win a JP in their lifetime are also just like you and I.
Don't get me wrong, a couple of times a month I'll buy one or two tickets for the Florida Fantasy Five in hopes of a miracle, but you'll never hear me say I know I'm going to win someday . No one knows if they will win for sure.

Texas All or Nothing
Silly me---a ten number match is $50 ----not $500.
I think I will study the dogs for awhile--maybe the horses too.
They are more fun and you can play a bunch of time most days.
I found a place that will let me play online.
I would think the odds in an 8 dog race is better than the pick 3
and the dogs sometimes give clues that will help narrow them
down to 2 or 3 numbers for an exacta and 3 or 4 for a trifecta.
A decent exacta will pay $25 or more and a decent
