I too have had 'trouble' with what's being argued so passionately in this thread. When I lived in the Northeast, although I lived in New York State, I lived in close proximity to Pennsylvania. Every Fall The PA Lottery (for what I'm guessing is the last 20 years or more) holds their Millionaire Raffle. According to the raffles official rules, a maximum of 500,000 tickets can be sold. The odds of winning are the same, but the odds of sharing the jackpot are higher.. It is like in NZ a lotto official said that there were usually about 3,000 tickets with 1,2,3,4,5,6 ... When picking your own numbers, people want a logical reason... Birthdays is another (so more likely to share prizes/ jackpots if the numbers are 1 - 31.

Are those really the odds? They calculate those claiming you might win another prize. If they are going to calculate them that way then why don't they add not making it to the store to buy a ticket into the mix? Or how about the odds of skipping 3 miles to the store while pharting Yankee Doodle in the key of C before you buy the winning ticket? 58C5 = 4,582,116 then they go through the gymnastics of saying you could win another prize to come up with the posted odds.
