Mega Millions and Powerball Race
I believe the reason for the drop was because the $1.7 billion Powerball jackpot was won. Mega Millions sales were up because Powerball sales were way up. Once the jackpot was won, sales for both games dropped dramatically.

Mega Millions and Powerball Race
The Mega Millions jackpot has increased by $25 million to $625 million after 31 consecutive rolls and is the largest Mega Millions jackpot since December 2024. There is a 3% chance the jackpot will be won in the October 17 draw with projected sales of $44 million. The sales per draw have been amazingly consistent over the last few draws and show no signs of increasing despite the relatively large size of the jackpot. The maximum draw sales for this run were $51 million and occurred for the Septe

Mega Millions and Powerball Race
It's interesting the estimated sales for mm tonight were $36,789,000 but the actual sales were $38,515,850. That's almost $2M more than expected but there was no change in the jackpot or cash amount or the expected next jackpot. Where are they putting the additional unexpected $2M in sales? I'm not sure how much they keep and how much goes to the jackpot. Is it half? Is that not enough to show an increase?

$1.3 BILLION: Powerball jackpot soars to 5th-largest in game history
How are sales, will it roll over?
I'm wondering if there's any chance that sales today have been lower than expected, because I was sure we'd see an updated jackpot this afternoon. Their own, and presumably conservative, sales estimate is for 112 million tickets which would add about $75 million cash and increase the annuity by $165 million. Saturday's drawing ended at about $544 million cash and $1.201 billion for the annuity. That means their sales estimate puts tomorrow's jackpot at $619

Mega Millions and Powerball Race
Where are they putting the additional unexpected $2M in sales?
They're putting it in the same places as every other $5 in sales. They skim half off the top and the rest goes into the prize pools. The ads are only for estimated jackpots, and higher sales increase it. They're not going to change the advertised amount unless sales are substantially higher than expected, and if you got those numbers from the site that shall not be named (which you must have, because the Texas worksheet doesn't
